TR6 performed as always, flawlessly to Madras, Or return trip engine doing it's usual thing, parts not so much. Don't carry spare tire figure aaa tow me to nearest tire shop, in tire compartment every spare part I'd need or have to order/wait for: starter, electronic ignition, coil, rotor, wires, plugs, dizzy cap, h20 pump, fan belt, led bulbs, temp sensor, fuel pump, slave cyl, carb rebuild kit, antifreeze, tool kit. The 1 spare I didn't have, alternator, failed
Off hwy 97 onto I-5 noticed slight hesitation & felt exhaust miss, eye balled amp gauge needle just to the -D side TR6 started to sputter took next available off ramp as around 4500 ft the skies got darker & darker the closer to Mt Shasta we got 40 miles north of Redding, Ca thunder, lighting shear force winds as the skies opened up, rain drops as big as tomatoes, wipers useless.
Took the next exit, ignition off to inspect under bonnet no disconnected wires had to use mini jumper to start, back on the road sputter got worse, misfires thrown in to boot, turned off headlights, wipers, OD no change, barely pulled away from stop sign, found a spot to pull over.
While sitting on side of road out in the middle of nowhere called Tracy explained the hesitation then sputtering/missing symptoms, right away he said alternator bad you've been driving on & draining the battery
Waiting for aaa guy pulls up, I'm thinking ready to fight to the death, he enters gate behind us 15 min later comes out, told him issues & waiting for aaa, back to his place 15 min later came back to recommend shop he goes to & give his & shop phone# saying they know him as Skip, he went to hi-school with their Dad, called them they knew him said he was a regular customer, recommended another shop cause they didn't trust their crew with older cars
Called Skip let him know we got towed to 2nd shop due to situation. He came back 15 min later, during our conversation he said he was 73, told him I'm 77 we shook hands/smiled knowing we were from same generation, told him I appreciated his assistance/concern, we both agreed that's how things use to be, people helping people.
aaa came 45 min into the schedule 1 hr arrival time (try to get that with any other tow service big box or collector would've been 2 hrs+) Got there around 2:30pm instead of a 1/2 mile down a dirt road in an old barn, a clean shop '57 chevy in the corner. They had fabricator, using my chrome alt to match/shave/fab new 51 amp to fit
Once fitted check charging system 880 CCA battery showed 178 CCA, they called orielly's for replacement none in stock, shop had aaa batteries (napa premium 800 CCA) checked napa site same battery priced $259.95
3hrs @$100 per + fab/shaved to fit new alt & battery total was fair vs took to the cleaners. TR6 done it's job could feel something wasn't right slight missing @70 mph before Weed, Ca could've happened on desolate hwy 97 no cell service
