Driveshaft Woes...

Hey all,

Well, i seem to be having a hard time trying to get my driveshaft out of my B. The 4 bolts that i need to remove to remove the drive shaft from the differential wont budge, then the 2 bolts that will move, just spin around. Im also fighting the wheels turning too.
I tried to block the wheels from turning the other night but almost had the B fall ontop of me :frown:

This is with the rear end up in the air on jack stands and the engine already out of the B.

Any idea's anyone? Im thinking of removing what i can of the u-joint under the vehicle and then deal with those stubborn bolts when i remove the entire rear end.

Thanks

I have to ask are you using one wrench or 2? The rear bolts dont have the cut on them to keep them from rotating and you will need a second wrench. If that doesn't work an angle grinder will make quick work of it. If your going to pull the rear end anyway forget about working under the car and remove the complete suspension though you may need the angle grinder for that as well.

Hey,

Well i managed to get the 4 bolts off from the rear of the driveshaft at the differential end. But it looks like i have to remove 4 more bolts on the end of the driveshaft that goes into the transmission :frown:

I was hoping the whole shaft would just pull away from the trans but it wont.

I do have another question. Once the other 4 bolts are removed from the yoke to the trans side of the driveshaft, is there a way of removing the driveshaft without moving the trans out of the way?
The driveshaft will not just drop down seeing as theres a 'hump' of somesort that the driveshaft will just end up resting ontop of (i am not refering to the trans cross member).

This is a very frustrating process so far :frown:

The other 4 shouldn't be that bad and you only need one wrench. Lots of penetrating fluid and heat if you need it. Make sure you invest in new hardware front and rear when it comes time to reinstall.

The shaft can come right out towards the back. You may have to angle it a bit to miss the axle but it will come right out.

Put some alignment marks on the shaft and flange, unscrew the slip-joint collar and YANK!!

My heart-felt advice is that you remove the trans from the chassis and mate it to the engine to re-install. MUCH easier to argie the two together on th' floor than the way it is now!

I don't think you can replace the four front bolts without removing the flange from the gearbox.
And if so, replace the rear gearbox seal while yer at it.
