Drivers license renewal?

I know Hawaii, declined to step in line with the HS procedure for drivers licenses. My last license renewal was for 10 years here. All I needed was old license and pass a vision test.

Anyone mention "Big Brother" here....

Are you sure there wasn't an "or" in here somewhere? You need a birth certificate to get a passport, so that seems completely extraneous. I suppose some proof of residence is legitimate, but there are lots of ways to do that. And what does the SS card prove?

This is really dumb....

Hmmm. you need a passport to get in to PR now? Just last year, When I came down, we dident need them, nor did we have them..... Grrrr. another cost to a return trip......
 
Yep, Banjo - the travel restrictions in and around the Caribbean & in & out of Mexico & Canada for US citizens have tightened up.....passports needed everywhere!
 
Not true. Puerto Rico is considered part of the United States and people living there are US citizens. My wife and daughter traveled there last month and my father-in law and sister traveled both ways earlier this year and they don't have passports. If you are a US citizen arriving in PR from a country requiring a passport from the US that's a different story.
 
since living in ct. since 1982 ive never had any problem renewing my drivers license, however a couple of weeks ago the stae police arrested a bunch of people in our norwalk d.m.v. for illegal sales of drivers licenses and said perhaps 50 to 100 employes may have been in on the sales, very serious, im expecting to see some trouble in the requirements for renewal shortly. :cryin:
 
Oregon just started requiring a valid SS card for drivers license renewal. I lost my card about 20 years ago, guess I'd better get a replacement before renewal time.
 
A Social Security card is not a valid means of identification & nobody other than the Social Security office can require that you use it for such. The bottom of my SS card states: "FOR SOCIAL SECURITY PURPOSES - NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION"

How can I protect my Social Security number?
You should treat your Social Security number as confidential information and avoid giving it out unnecessarily. You should keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers. Do not carry it with you unless you need to show it to an employer or service provider.

We do several things to protect your number from misuse. For example, we require and carefully inspect proof of identity from people who apply to replace lost or stolen Social Security cards, or for corrected cards. One reason we do this is to prevent people from fraudulently obtaining Social Security numbers to establish false identities. We maintain the privacy of Social Security records unless:

The law requires us to disclose information to another government agency; or
Your information is needed to conduct Social Security or other government health or welfare program business.
You should be very careful about sharing your number and card to protect against misuse of your number. Giving your number is voluntary even when you are asked for the number directly. If requested, you should ask:

Why your number is needed;
How your number will be used;
What happens if you refuse; and
What law requires you to give your number.
 
I suspect it all has to do with the ReadID act (as mentioned previously by TR6oldtimer. My state attempted to delay implementing it for driver's licenses but caved back in April, largely due to this threat from the feds.

My, my...

I have my first UK driving license issued when I first passed my test here back in 1984, it's valid until I turn 70 I think...

It's just a large-ish piece of paper with my details and room for the local constabulary to write up nasty notes about my driving should they have occassion to. No photo.

I was driving once in Utah and was stopped by the State police at a check point. They asked for my license and couldn't believe what they got....

They then asked for a photo ID and I gave them my library card.

They just shook their heads and laughed....

But old paper ones are not being issued any longer now and new Photo ID card are being issued, and they require renewal every 10 years.

I`m a "Naturalized" citizen. Born in Hamburg, Germany. "Ukranian" by decent. Came here when I was 2yrs old (Loooonnnngggg time ago).

Anyways, I had my license renewed 5-07 and it was a simple thing to do. What its like today ??? But, I surely would contest the "SS" number requirement.

Fortunately I do have a passport (Outdated but I have one). What if you did`nt have one? Would you be "FORCED" to get one? It just does`nt sound ethical or legal to me.

heck; even the Social Security Dept. does`nt recognise a SS card as being proof of identity. I just found this out when inquiring about SS benefits (Soon to come). You "MUST" have 2 forms of ID: Either a Drivers License, Passport, Orig. Birth Certificate but the SS card does`nt mean squat to the Social Security Dept. Go Figure!!

Relative to PR: I guess with all the illegal aliens coming into this country of late; Maybe its a good idea there but here (Stateside), It stinks!

I renew mine on the Web. Car registrations as well.
 
In New York we can re-register the car on line, but renewals of the license requires an eye test, so you have to show up at DMV. Probably a good thing.
 
To be fair, you cannot do that repeatedly in Fl. either, and after a certain age there are mandatory eye tests too!!
