Oh yeah, I remember that movie! Definitely on the cutting "edge." The house where it was filmed (the saucer house) is just west of Denver and can be seen on a mountain side as you drive on I-70 out of Denver on the south side of the highway. When it last sold (in 2010 I think) it was sold complete with the Orgasmatron (non functioning I trust).
Just because we CAN make something doesn't mean we should, e.g. the SST. The driverless car might be fine on I-10 or I-95 or I-5, but on an icy, winding New England back road?? Or how do you break into an endless stream of traffic in Ft. Myers. FL - the worst I've ever seen as we waited to turn out into a main drag from an unlighted (traffic signal) side street? Took us over 10 minutes and we had to cut off a line of cars. Or cut across several lanes of 65 mph traffic in order to head west from I-95 south of Miami? The worst intersection I've ever seen. To say nothing of teen-aged hackers working overtime devising ways to cause a massive pileup. A Jeep has already been hacked and caused to go off the road, embarrassing Chrysler. It'll be a field day for personal injury lawyers. Who do you sue - the manufacturer, the dealer, the owner when one of these driverless cars has an accident as it certainly will. One dead driver already in a Tesla, piled into a white trailer truck "unseen" by the driverless car. No thank you.

When I am in areas I don't know, sometime I might appreciate something more than just the GPS to get me where I want to go. But the one time I would like to go to a "Driverless" mode is when I see something that would make a good photograph, and it would nice to take a minute or two to take some photos along the road, and then take the wheel again.

The fuss I have is that I like to drive. Period. I also don't like the idea of being on the road surrounded by vehicles that, if their computer has a glitch, the results could be disastrous, never mind the possibility of a virus or worm or hacking. I do agree with you about the humans with their heads buried in their iPhones, but that can and should be dealt with via stiff penalties, especially if you cause an accident while distracted (for any reason). My wife often gets mad at me because, if I'm driving in heavy traffic, I won't talk to her - I politely tell her, "honey I can't talk right now, gotta focus on this traffic." I've been driving long enough to know that even a fraction of a second of distraction can end in crumpled fenders or worse.

Out hear in SD one thing that I have noticed is with the increase of the speed limit on the interstate to 80 is you don't see as many people looking out there phones . Would be interesting to see the stats of accidents before the 80 and now
