Driver download Question

I need to download a WiFi driver for another computer That is not on the network as the WiFi driver is missing. I know the driver and where to download it, but I need to put it on a stick so I can install it in the other computer. How do I do this? Seems like the program always want's to install it in the computer I'm downloading it with, but has no avenue to the stick. ?? PJ

I think you can choose "save" instead of "run", then save it
to the USB stick. Wait for others to confirm or give better advice.

Might work, but in many cases what you're saving isn't the software but the program that actually downloads and installs the driver. So the other computer would still nee web access.

Thanks guys. I'll have to hard wire it I guess to the server, download the driver and go from there. Is there a good program that will download and install the driver, one that doesn't cost an arm and leg? PJ

Drivers should always be free and don't need extra software to install. That being said, some drivers come with self-installers. Sound Blaster and Nvidia come to mind. It sounds like you are trying to use one of those "Driver Download" sites that use their software to manage all the drivers on your computer. I've always kept those off my computer from a lack of trust on my part.

What wifi driver are you trying to install exactly? Either the manufacturer of the wifi or Microsoft should have it.

With chrome I can soecify the location of a download - and then start the i stall by clicking on the file. You should be able to directly download to the stick.

Greg, here's the driver I need, (or so I'm told)

Realtek RTL8188CE WirelessAN 802.11n PCI-EIC

It's a Toshiba Satellite Lap Top

JP Thanks, another avenue to pursue.

I reinstalled W-7 on this computer and the wireless quit working. Now the wireless driver is missing. I thought that driver would be in Windows. Where is this driver supposed to go? I only know what I learn from guys like you who know this stuff. So, be gentle! :encouragement: PJ

Use a CAT-5 cable to access the 'net, go and download it.

As Greg pointed out, the "auto download helper" warez are suspect. Find the ".exe" file for the driver install.

What model Toshi? And Win7 32 or 64 bit (not that it would really matter, methinks)?

THIS (ver. # 2007.12.0419.2013 for winXP/Vista/Win7) looks like the driver you need. When you click on the download sites on the right side, you want to save the zip file onto the thumb drive. Win7 should be able to extract the zip automatically

Thanks Greg, I now have the zip file on a stick. Don't have time right now, but I might have a lot of time the rest of the week! 3 to 6 inches of snow coming with freezing rain, sleet etc. Temps dropping down into the twenties for the next two weeks, then more snow over the weekend! Gee whiz I hate Winter. :frown-new: PJ

SUCCESS!! Thanks Greg for the driver download site. I loaded it on a stick and when the W-7 computer picked it up, I hit setup and it did it's own thing from there. I'm on the WiFi now using the W-7 machine to make this post. Thanks very much! PJ:applause:
