Drive shaft won't come out of the transmission

Hello all,

I am pulling the engine/transmission on a 70 midget to
install a t9 5spd kit and everything went fine except the
driveshaft won't come out of the transmission. It just plain
won't come out. It is now disconnected from the axle but
still I cannot get it out. What am I doing wrong?

I thought the t9 conversion was for the 1500?
do you have a 1500?
if so the drive shaft unbolts.


if you have a 1275 it should just slide out...
never heard of one getting stuck.

ok i see the t9 fits the 1275 and the 1500. sorry about that

and yes it slides out. Just double check that it is not hitting anything.

And... don't forget to drain the oil out of the transmission BEFORE pulling it.
 
I had the same problem with my B/E, it was just stuck. We ended up pulling the motor/transmission and driveline in one pull. As we got the transmission out far enough we then removed the driveshaft. We had to soak the sleeve in penetrating oil and then use a little force to pull it. It was not rust as much as dried grease that kept it from moving. The car had sat for more then 10 years.

Hi There Patrick,

"BP BLASTER": Blast it to death with this stuff.

A little bit of Heat from a torch probably would`nt hurt.

This stuff loosens up anything that gets in its way.

I had the same problem with my bug. I pulled the engine and gearbox with the driveshaft attached. Today I would use heat and PB Blaster. Three years ago I used a BFH. I put a piece of oak through the U joint and gave it a smack. I did not have a slide hammer but would have used that. I probably tapped in towards the gearbox to loose it as well as away from the box.
 
Thanks everyone, it was just STUCK. That was really no fun at all -grin-.
The pinion shaft is quite loose so I'm guessing it has been this way for some
time and not being able to move at the tranny has taken its toll.
I will admit walking around the garage trying to keep from flinging the
thing into the woods when it finally came out. But it IS out and the engine
and tranny are sitting on the floor, where the tranny will probably be for
some time.

I think I'll mess with the bugeye at least until the tranny kit for the midget
shows up.
