The corner hardware store drill bits aren't cutting it (pun) for me. Anyone have a source for some hardened bits that are machine shop quality?

Cobalt drill bits are the best. ... Carbon steel can form a sharp edge and can be made hard. It is an excellent choice provided you use a low drill speed when drilling hard steel.

Generally low speeds work best when drilling in metal.--Fwiw--Keoke

Dewalt has bits that have a small starter tip on them that keeps them from walking and work great on drilling out spot welds. Lowes and Home Depot have them.

Few things aggrivate me more than a dull drill bit! :madder:

I kept buying new ones to replace the dull ones. I ended up with a cigar box full of DULL drill bits of all sizes and lengths.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Drill Doctor DD500 on sale. Over the span of a couple of evenings, I sharpened ALL of my drill bits. Even at the $100 sale price, it was a WHOLE LOT cheeper than replacing all of those bits AGAIN....

This machine is FANTASTIC!!! With its diamond sharpening "stone", it will sharpen normal 118o points and more shallow 135o points as well as masonry drills. It will also create and sharpen split points which resist "walking" when starting.

Now I after a couple of usages, I throw the dull bit into a box and sharpen all of them when I get a handful. NO more dull drill bits for me.

I don't make any money from Drill Dr., but this drill sharpener is one of the most valuable tools I have.
