Dream jobs?

Steve_S said:
When you turn a hobby into a job, you lose what you first loved about it.

This is something I've thought about, as my dream job would be full-time musician. I did it once, and while it was a great experience, it was also stressful (and not good for my credit cards). What I'd really want to be is a highly successful musician, doing a bit of touring and recording, and lots of loafing around... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I've got one friend locally who is a full-time player (jazz sax, amazing player). He loves it, but money is always tight and he's been without health insurance for years. Not sure I'd trade my current gig (programmer for a school district) and side work as a musician for full-time music work. I like a steady paycheck.

Every day when I get out of bed, I wander out to my garage & decide which of my cars I'll work on that day...& if I don't want to work on a particular car today, I put it off until tomorrow or until I feel in the mood!

Most days, I go out to one of my used parts buildings & piddle around, looking for something for myself or someone else (gotta get around to cleaning them out one of these days - might be amazed at what I find).

Just about every day, I call my guy at Moss & discuss things British.

And, best of all, I visit with all you LBC-er's every day.

Oh, when I have to work, I get on my lawnmower & cut my 3-1/2 acre yard - that ain't no fun! &, speaking of which, gotta do that today...theere goes 4 hours wasted!

Bret, can i give two examples? first choice would be a surgeon, <snip> second choice.. an artist, <snip>

So...what you're saying is you want to be on the "cutting edge" of technology and "be able to draw" from a wide group of patients!

As a kid I wanted to fly fighter jets or work as a bouncer in a strip joint. Eventually became an accountant.

Just went back & looked at my high school yearbook - under dream job is written "Bartender in a Playboy Club". I actually had a 1-year membership in one once - Hugh Hefner gave them to returning Vietnam veterans in 1968 when we got out of the hospital...visited the one in Atlanta a few times...interesting place!

If we are dreaming...
1. Space shuttle astronaut
2. Deep Sea exploration biologist
3. Wildlife biologist in Alaska or Canadian Wilderness
4. Tour guide in Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, Glacier National Park, Montana or the Tetons.

Anyway back to the hear & now:
I'd say if I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now – I think I’d settle for being an editor at large for an upper tier automotive publication. Test driving & writing about Super Cars & the latest cutting edge designs, as well as attending auto trade shows and motorsporting events all over the world.

So what about the rest of you?

I sort of have your dream job, except I take the pictures and rarely have to write /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Love it, but would be more of a dream if I made more money at it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Yes and no...I really wanted to be doing the Monaco F1 race, Lime Rock Trans Am, Riverside Can Am sort of stuff...

Ah, I get it now, missed your post /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I think racing photography might fall under the best left as a hobby category, though I know a few guys who do it and seem to like it.

I've done my share of that kind of shooting, but for me, the whole competing for that same shot that everyone else is trying to get through the same 5 tiny holes in the fence at the race track, got old real fast. I participate on an automotive photography forum and the race shooters all come back with the same shots as each other

Rally did not have those issues, but I came to the realization that I got into it because really wanted to drive and taking pictures allowed me to live vicariously thought them. It was fun, and I made a lot friends and had a lot of adventures, but I was really just a "hanger-on"

And then you have the guys who give their work away for free or to get credentials when you have to try and sell your work for money. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Then there was the nearly getting killed part.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

I like the shooting cars for magazine stories (and other stuff) much better, I get to be more creative, often get to drive the cars, even take them home for a few days (confuses the neighbors when you are bringing home different expensive cars all the time), and sometimes even get track time in them /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

The downside is I have to live in an expensive city (so the money is just adequate, though there is potential) and I freelance, so no benefits and work can be sporadic (which is unnerving at times).

That picture is pretty funny. All those guys with huge lenses crammed into that hole, and then the young girl with the little (by comparison) camera left out in the cold. I know she's reviewing shots, but it looks like she's pouting. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

<span style="color: #3333FF"><span style='font-size: 17pt'>That grill is just too cool</span>!!!</span>

Just wondering - is it for sale and how much???

Very interesting, Nutmeg! Old Sturbridge Village used to be in my almost backyard. Many a trip was taken there with family, Brownies, Girl Scouts, etc. One of the most interesting tourist attractions ever. My old neighborhood was Worcester County, the Brookfields and Barre.

My ideal profession is what I am doing now, no matter what it is. I'm just happy to do.

I'd like to be a cartoonist like Gary Larson or Bill Watterson. But I don't think I can sustain the wit that they offered daily.
Then I've often thought of trying to publish a childrens book. But I don't even know where to start.
I like to build things, I've made Braisers (like a small charcoal grill) and candle lanterns, and such for living history camping.
I had my dream job for a while. working in a Sports car shop, repairing and restoring all kinds of vintage cars (heavily in the British catagory) and installing drivelines into Superformance Cobras.
Personally having to do it for a living did not take the fun out of it for me. I knew I was getting chances I otherwise never would have gotton. I enjoyed getting tons of time to dive into the darkest regions of all my favorite cars, and drive most of them. Not to mention all the neat people I met.
If I though I could sustain a steady paycheck working on LBCs I'd go back to doing that in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, when it turns into a job, I tend to wake up!

Interpreting peoples dreams...now there's a dream job!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I've always wanted to be a pilot. Sure, I would luvvvvvvvvv to be going Mach 2 with my hair on fire yankin and bankin, but I would be just as happy flying freight out of Hong Kong. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
