Can a DR2 non self parking wiper motor be converted to self parking?

Well, in general I think it would be possible. Main problem is adding a switch (or sensor of some sort) to 'know' when the wipers are parked. Add a bump of some sort to the gear, and a switch to ride on it.

However, where did you find a DR2 without the self-parking feature? I thought all DR2 wiper motors had the switch, even those found on Standard 8s, Healeys and so on. The non-parking motor used on early TRs was a CRT15 I believe.

My point is that it might be a lot easier and simpler to pick up a used DR2 that already has the park contacts incorporated; or even incorporate the parts from it into your current motor.

Close enough; it was a CRT14 according to my Lucas 400E Master Catalogue. As for the Model DR2: "Rack type; dual arm; single speed with adjustable switch for self parking. Separate operating switch."

[CRT14: <span style="font-style: italic">C</span>able, <span style="font-style: italic">R</span>ack, <span style="font-style: italic">T</span>hermostatic Control. <span style="font-style: italic">14</span> indicates Dual arm; separate switch.]

You're probably right as usual, Andy. But the factory workshop manual called it a CRT15, so I'm not totally senile yet :jester:

Mine is not the CRT type. Cover plate reads as follows

DR2 9 60 BN236
75380 A

And why do you think it doesn't have the self-parking feature? Has someone replaced the cover with one that doesn't have the switch?

I don't have 75380A listed in my Lucas-Triumph catalogs. Andy, do you know what car it would be from? And more importantly, how long a sweep it has?

...and it wouldn't be the first time that there was a typo in either the TR2 Workshop Manual or the Lucas 400E (or any other Lucas) catalogue! I'll see what the CRT15 spec's are, and I'll also look up that other part number tonight.

Interesting; I've never seen one like that. I guess there was a reason it was on the shelf for 49 years, huh?

Looks like it should be easy enough to convert, using the parts from a DR2 with the park switch. You'll need the little finger that fits on the crank post; and the top cover with the switch incorporated. Your choice whether to run the wire inside the motor as original; I would probably just connect it to terminal 1 on the outside instead.

That post looks awfully close to the edge of the gear to me ... are you sure the sweep is appropriate for your car?

The location of the post on the gear determines how far the wiper arms move, post farther out means more motion at the arms. A TR3 takes a relatively small sweep, the wrong gear means the wiper blades hit the windshield frame. But I have no idea what a Sprite takes.

It was purchased in 1978 by the PO of my Bugeye Sprite along with a bunch of other NOS parts with the intent to start a restoration. He never got around to the project.

Oddly enough, I have no application listing for it, but I do see spec's in the Lucas 400E Catalogue. Angle of wipe (standard) is 140 degrees; angle of wipe (when large gear wheelbox is used) is 97 degrees! The 75296 listed for early Bugeyes is a 120 degree angle, and the 75213 listed for later cars is 110.

OH, and the CRT15: Single or dual arm; separate switch; wheelboxes with front and rear bush fixing...if that helps anyone.

Frank

They pop right up for me.

All

Thanks for the discussion, At least I'm in a different quandary than I was in when the discussion started.

Does anyone have a Lucas P/N for the drive gear and cap correct for a later Bugeye Sprite?
