If you come through Huntsville, AL, there's the Space & Rocket Center, a great museum to America's space program.

I hear that you have to make resevations - or know
the doorman - or be "somebody".I guess that counts me out.
I know all of the "wrong" people.

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

Garagemahal is open to the public but you got to know someone to get the chains down and the lights on.

Just shout hay Tony. If he is busy just sit, enjoy the flavor of the place, grab a cool one from the fridge. Check the wall decorations, the library, the orental carpet on the floor, and the many projects underway. Cars, what cars.

Actually you could spend several hours just looking, and then, and then there are the storage areas, sigh. So much it is hard to take it in.

No, might as well bypass the Garagemahal. It will just make you upset and disgruntled with you own place.

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

Not much down here in North Florida but the finest, whitest beaches in the world.

I won't hijack this thread but I'll be making a new one in the "Local Events Forum" soon...just remember September 22 & have a British car for the show & that's capable of joining in a short fun drive up Keel Mountain & over Monte Sano. 'Nuff said right now - one more coordination meeting before posting more info....

If you are in Jacksonville take the drive to St Augustine.Very interesting and historical.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif St Augustine is a must if you will be in Jax! A drive to Daytona so that you can drive down the beach would be different as would a visit to the Cape to the Space Museum! Other than that I am a little too far south to be of much help! And of course there's always Orlando /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

I second Mike's suggestion. If you've never done it swing by St Augustine. There's also an old Fort on the shoreline NE of Jacksonville called Fort Caroline, I've seen it from the air quite a few times and it looks like a neat place to visit. I nice road-trip south to the Daytona area is to take SR13 along the St Johns river all the way down south. Cross over on SR100 or SR40 to Daytona. On the way back take A1A all the way along the ocean.

If you go to the Fountian of Youth in Fla. don't expect too much if you drink the water. I think I drank a gallon of the stuff five years ago and it hasn't done a thing for me!

Come to think of it, it didn't even slow the process down. Might work for you though.

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

Swing by here for a little while. Tupelo has the largest car museum in Mississippi and the area. Come see the house where it all started ( I'm talking about "The King" of course). Heck, we might even feed ya pretty good (catfish, hushpuppies, fried green tomatoes, etc...) Just a thought. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Actually one of the best museums in the country, IMHO!! Next time we come over to tour, I'll call you.

If you are brave enough take Hwy 50 from Fernly, NV east to I-15 (the lonliest hwy in America!) Then Grab US 6 and head toward Moab, UT. Take in "The Arches" if you can...a spectacular ride.

Head down US 191..over to US 491...US 550 thru Farmington, NM then south to Albuqueque, NM. Stop at "Angel's Lookout" on old 66 just west of Albuqueque at the top of the grade. Take I-40, if you must, get to the top and head south 1/2 mile. Turn left at the stop sign and get the best view of the Valley...awesome at night!

Get on Route 66 "The Mother Road". Take that east...visit Amarillo (Cadillac Ranch) and Shamrock, TX (great gas station on old 66 on your left). Lots to do and see. Explore Route 66 for a once in a life time experience.

Take Hwy 287 south out of Amarillo to Ft Worth and east. Or you can stay on I-40 and head to Memphis. Visit Beale Street and the Gibson guitar factory. Eat some great Bar-b-que. Then head SE on US Hwy 78 thru Tupelo and into Birmingham. 78 takes you right into I-20.

Don't forget to save room for some Cajun food in Loiusiana. Visit the beaches at Panama City.

Have a good time...America is a great place to visit!

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

Here's another one to add to your list - the Ormond Beach Scenic "Loop", world famous (in case nobody knew, hehe) really because of the exposure the bikers give it during Bike Week. I haven't driven around any areas quite like it anywhere else in the eastern part of the state. They've been bound and determined to try and bulldoze it for years. One large sweeping corner of it has been completely opened up for a new road and massive development, but most of it is still intact. Most of the 'Loop' runs under a low tree canopy, in the summer it sometimes feels like you're driving into a tunnel. On the mainland side it is mostly undeveloped back country, then swings along a marshy/canal area and turns into a palm-lined road before crossing over the Halifax River where you can drive down the Atlantic Ocean or meander past a mixture of new, old, and historic homes that back up to the river. The whole loop takes about 30 minutes without stops, and gives a completely different view of Florida than the stereotypical beachfront-condo one people typically get.

It's also how I get to work /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

They just published a new article in the local rag about it, here.

Re: Dr.E,Jack,,& other Floridians

US 50 in Nevada is a neat drive, lonely but neat. We did it for Open Roads at Lake Tahoe in 2002. In fact, US 50 is neat all the way to Ocean City, MD

If you get to Missouri and are going west to east, Hwy 160 from Springfield to Poplar Bluff is a very nice two lane twisty. North to south, I would recommend MO Hwy 19 from I-70 to Alton, MO on Hwy 160. There are lots of wineries in Herman, MO

Good luck on your trip, sounds like fun.
