I agree that LinkedIn is free of nonsense... but I'm still half wonder what IT is for. Yeah, I understand networking, but many people connect just to connect. And it's very annoying that they try to get into your address book and send out requests. I've received requests from people that had no idea they'd sent out requests. I think I'll probably shut that account down too (as I hit retirement - and just don't care). :cool:

The absolute worst thing you can do, as in most stupid, opens you up to more security issues, and your contacts, is to put your address book on-line.
Even with your e-mail provider.
AOL, yahoo, how many of those accounts get hacked daily, and the spam goes out under your name to everybody in your address book....plus they have all those "good" e-mail addresses to use for spam.
NEVER let ANY website into your address book, either.
People just don't think.

Agreed. And every time I go into the thing (which isn't often), it ALWAYS tries to get my address-book. I'll never cave it, but I can see how people innocently do.
 
I just read that Facebook announced changes in their privacy policy. They are going to install trackers in every member's browser to see where people go. Even when they aren't logged into Facebook. So basically 24/7 surveillance. It also tells you how to avoid the tracking. Here is a link to the article at the bottom. Even though it is an article against Facebook's policies, I find it ironic that there are 3 Facebook trackers embedded in this page along with 22 other trackers including Twitter.

I have a computer that I was going to use for the Facebook thing. It is a stripped down Linux system with no personal info on it at all. I use it as a guitar effects rack so there is nothing other than the OS and a couple programs.

WOW! Yes, it's "time to put Facebook in the corner." Gads. They certainly complete the modern adage, if something is "free" then YOU are the product.

You're right, I haven't done any actual networking and I don't allow it access to anything, but it does allow me to email some folks I want to keep in touch with, like my 30 some years ago college best friend who's 2000 miles away from me.

One of the things all us, "more well aged" guys need to remember is that the younger generation who developed and use many of these social networking tools see personal privacy in a completely different light than those of us who didn't grow up with it. They see nothing wrong with posting notes and photos doing practically anything under the sun and don't understand why others, current and potential employers in particular, show concern. I don't really do anything that embarrassing, I tend towards dull enough that I can't imagine anyone wanting to track my days, but there are still things I wouldn't want to share with "the world".

I hate liver. Thought is was pork chops once, bad move; almost returned it back to the pan with breakfast.
