They were good cars, well-engineered and built to last, the problem was that with such a small company there were no economies of scale, and their cars were priced too high to be competitive with the Opels and Volkswagens in their home market. In the export markets their pricing was through the roof. The Isabella coupe was a beautiful piece of kit.......
I always thought of the Isabella as a sort of poor man's BMW 503 - a car I'd love to have. The interior reeked of high quality materials & workmanship. I think they were a little underpowered, though.
Guy's name is Alan,& he lives in Willits,CA.
He's had the Borgward for sale for a long time.He
wheels & deals in the odd cars.
I've never met him,but have heard from people
who've had dealings with him.
I know of several Borgward's slowly rusting away here in Calgary... One nearby downtown, virtually hidden in a driveway... And two of them at a small airport just outside of town, but I know they are too far gone for restoration, maybe even for parts sourcing, they are in tall grass...
But in all these cases they are the more ordinary Isabella sedan or wagon, not the sport coupe everyone wants...
One of my high school buddies had a Borgward that we used as a woods car. It sort of reminded me of a smaller Mercedes. I also knew someone who had a Lloyd, which was part of the same company.
The Isabella Coupe' reminded me of an M-B 190 SL. Generally appealing looking but with a slightly long, heavy tail (to my eyes, aty least).
I was always keen on their early race efforts. They followed the lead of Porsche and built some neat sports-racing cars.

In 1963 all manufacturing equipment for the Borgward was sold to a group of Mexican businessmen. They built a small number of cars in Mexico, but finally shut down in 1970.
