Agreed. Impressed with her career but even more with her life. She will be missed.
 
i live in her hometown. the house i live in is about halfway (as the MGC drives) between her themepark, "Dollywood," and the last house her momma lived in before she passed. i have NEVER heard anyone here say an ill word about her. she did amazing work for this community. plus, she was a real class act. no exceptions. she will be missed. Godspeed Dolly. Glad to have shared space with you, sister.
 
American flags are being lowered this week in her honor. Other civilians (non-politicians) in history to be thus honored:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. (1968) — President Lyndon Johnson ordered flags lowered following King's assassination.
  • Coretta Scott King (2006) — President George W. Bush ordered flags at half-staff on the day of her interment.
  • Dorothy Height (2010) — The longtime civil-rights leader never held elected office. President Obama ordered flags at half-staff on the day of her funeral.
  • Neil Armstrong (2012) — Although a former federal employee and astronaut, he was not a politician or elected official. President Obama ordered flags lowered on the day of his burial.
  • Billy Graham (2018) — The evangelist never held public office. President Trump ordered flags lowered on the day of his interment.
  • Bob Hope (2003) — The entertainer was honored by President George W. Bush with flags lowered on the day of his interment.
  • Roy Wilkins (1981) — The longtime NAACP leader was similarly honored.
  • Walter W. Williams (1959) — Believed at the time to be the last surviving Civil War veteran, Williams was a private citizen when he died. President Eisenhower ordered flags lowered nationwide until his burial.

As a bit of an aside, Mrs JP and I were discussing Dolly's death in conjunction with Frank Beard's death. It is weird to me that they were only three years apart in age. To me they feel like they came from two completely different eras of music.
 
An absolute gem of a human being. She was a paragon of what a celebrity could be.
