3 years ago I bought the Herald (from Pedro international car sales /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif ) and almost immediately the engine up and died, so did the gearbox and the differential (which I knew about before I bought the car).
Towards the end of the summer I finally got it mostly back together but it still missed badly and had all sorts of drivability issues.
Last night I finally got it to run properly, it no longer misses, and the engine sounds great (well maybe to quite!) In a quick run around the block it seems to run real nice and pulls very nicely. Just a few more tiny things to solve and I can bring it in for inspection.
Here are the major things I did:
Different engine block (original was bored to 0.6 over and shot) new block is a small crank 1300 and unfortunately, we had to bore it to 0.6 to get a good cyl bore.
Crane XR700 ignition with a high voltage coil.
carb rebuilt,
rocker arms rebuilt, the rest of the head was in good condition.
Rebuilt a different later gearbox(4 syncro type vs. the original 3 syncro box)
Front / rear suspension totally rebuilt, bushings were all replaced with harder polymer bushings. New gas shocks all around (KYB)
Steering bits all rebuilt followed by a full (4 wheel) alignment.
Fully rebuilt brakes.
Most of the really weird electrical issues worked out (like the heater switch turning on the high beams)
Other than the machine work I did all the work by myself in my non-existent spare time.
There are still a few things to do such as send the dizzy out for a proper rebuild, and some work on the interior but that is all secondary. Happily the body work is in fairly good condition. No major rust issues just one hole under the rear seat. However for the next year or so I think I am going to drive it as is and then deal with the minor body work and paint.
