Nothing wrong with 98SE, either, BTW.

You could trim the 'overhead' to just running AVG Free as anti-virus warez, if you had a true firewall. Take some time and check into this: Firewall "appliance"

Hunt up an old PC and cob it together with Smoothwall.

(I have no affiliation with these guys, it's just a REALLY good way to do things)
 
As another aside, the O/S there is Linux. Same kind of kernel used by "Industrial Strength" corporate firewalls like "WatchGuard" etc. without the corporate-size wallet flattening.

Every client I have has a Smoothie 'running point' in front of the WAN.
 
A couple of things I did with my one and only win98 se machine. {I have on my network 4 other xp machines} First I deleted the Internet Explorer and Outlook express folders {download another web browser first tho}{I DO NOT use my I.S.P. email address} I have several online {Yahoo} email address that serve several purposes. {one strictly for family} {one for "Firends"} {One I give to acquaintenances} ETC. {you get the idea} For a web browser I use Mozilla Firefox. I also use Disk Cleaner {It`s free get it here https://www.diskcleaner.nl/. Use it FAITHFULY EVERY time you get done using the internet run this program. I use Norton antivirus {the same one the govt, uses}. But any good Anti Viri will do. I also run a software firewall on ALL my machines "Smoothie" looks like a good choice. Last but not least sometimes the pinging you see is your own I.S.P. pinging you to see if your machine is idle or not. If you run an I.R.C. program, Mirc, ICQ, Yahoo messenger, I.A.M. ETC. they aslo ping your machine. I HATE Internet Explorer because of thier "COOKIE" configuration and the constant "POPUPS" along with ALL of the vunerabilities it has I.M.H.O. It`s JUNK! And Outlook express is surmount to having very old dynamite laying around Just waiting to go Boom! {Just MY opinion.} I don`t use either of them, Won`t use them. and sence I QUIT useing them i`v been a HAPPY CAMPER.
Note I don`t use I.E. or O.E. on my XP machines either!

Useing AGV anti virus, AD-awair, windows Pro. Have never had a virus. Well, it has been many years.

Use Outlook express and all the other micro soft stuff.
 
Yeah Bazil, you may have dodged the bullet but I got the shrapnel; Here is what is in my virus vault and I could not go near the forum addy because my firewall Said Virus Detected until late this afternoon Virus file name: "British_Car_ Forum".. I also had to sign back in after I cleared the bug---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif
