Dizzy Replacement - Petronix

My BJ-8 was caughing, spitting and just generally running poorly. I did all the standard check and the distributor was showing a lot of wear (lots of play in the distributor shaft)so I decided to replace it with a new Petronix distributor. Got the dizzy on ebay for something like $180, which I though was a good price. I installed the new unit on Sun and the engine fired right up and the timing was perfect. I know the petronix distributor does not look original but it seems to work great and I was tired of dealing with poor quality (are you listening Moss Motors??)points, rotors and condensors and the cost of the distributor cap was getting too high. I think this is going to be a change that adds reliability to my driver. Drop me a line if you have any questions about this.

FYI, Jeff at Advanced Distributor sells high quality rotors for the AH, none of that riveted junk. I just put one of his pertronix kits in my mum's spitfire. Works like a dream.

Hi August,
I saw on Pertronix' website the following: "Tailored advance curve for optimal performance and driveability." What does that mean? Is the advance curve adjusted in the traditional way or is it programmed? If it is programmed, how does it deal with modified engines. For instance, the 123 dizzy has 16 pre-programmed curves that you change with a series of switches. Thanks.

I don't know how they are doing it Greg. However, the Pertronix 11 has the ability to optimise the advance curve.I would imagine it is programable since that is the easiest way ro do it.

Greg -

Pertronix told me they use an advance curve that works best for most LBCs. they also told me that you can change the curve specific to your car by changing weights and springs, just like a regular dizzy.

Thanks Alan,
It sounds like that dizzy is very similar to what I have. A Mallory dual point with a Pertronix installed. The straight Pertronix dizzy looks to be a more economical purchase.
