Dizzy options

Morning all! I have a bit of a dilemma. The Delco Remi dizzy with mechanical tach drive on my 74 Spit is on its last leg. I can’t find a rebuild kit for it. What are my options? Do I spend the bucks for a breaker-less ignition? Can I get one with the tach drive? Anyone know where I can find new parts for my old one? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Keith

Contact Bob at lucasdistributors@yahoo.com. He is the primo Lucas / Delco distributor expert and offers a ton of services. He may have one to swap you out that is already rebuilt. I'm sending him a spare for my TR6 to o/haul, powder coat and setup for me. No website. Not cheap, but the best doesn't come cheap.

Good luck,

Gentlemen, what are some of the symptoms of a shot distributor? I ask, because I was lucky enough to receive a little help from a basic mechanic who was checking the dwell on my distributor, and he commented that it was worn. He made this comment after he hooked up a device (to check the dwell) that measured the rpm from the dizzy. However, the car does run rather well, and I'm a little confused as to whether to send it in for servicing at this point (maybe to avoid a breakdown). I know this is basic, but I'm learning a lot from you guys, and very thankful.

Hello Flummoxed,

what happens is that the timing tends to move about when the distributor is worn, normally refered to as 'scatter'. You can have the distributor re-bushed, go the devil's route and use electronic contactless system or do as I would and ignore it if you are happy with the engine performance.
Incidentally, a few years ago I had a (with a rather expensive British Classic)worn distributor so I bought a brand new replacement. The result was absolutely no difference between old and new and the new also showed 'scatter'.

In that case, the dizzy stays in. The car is running very well, knock on wood, and haven't noticed a "scatter" as of yet. That's really interesting that the replacement made no discernible difference. Thanks very much, Alec.

We have a similar situation. The distibutor in the '79 Spit seems very worn. The shaft seems loose in the body and the body even seems loose (yes, all hold downs are tight). How bad is it? Well, I replaced the cap and rotor and the new rotor wore grooves into the new cap within 5 minutes or running and the ignition when all funny. Reinstalled the old cap (new rotor) and runs better, but the timing is still a bit flakey. I'm thinking new distibutor or some sort of rebuilt option. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

On the plus side, I fiddled with the ZS a bit and got the engine to idle closer to normal, rather than at 2000-3000 rpms. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
