Distributor rotor

Has anyone out there ordered the "Premium Ignition Rotor" part # 151-805 from Moss? I was having some misfire issues and decided to get a new known good one since some of my spares were in the dreaded green Lucas boxes. The new rotor fits very loose on the distributor in the car and my two spares. In fact I ordered two rotors and they are both loose on all three distributors. The new rotors don't have any type of spring steel in the center to take up slack. I'm waiting for Moss to open at 8:00 PST but wanted to know if others have had this problem. I'll be calling Jeff at Advanced Distributors to see what he has but this really bugs me that a part that is advertised as "premium" is in fact junk.
 
I bought one a few months back when I put in new points, condensor, and low tension lead. I replaced the parts individually in that sequence and changing the low tension lead actually fixed my misfire issue. The premium rotor I got from Moss seems to fit much more snug than the plain one I got at the same time so I am sticking with it. It too expensive though.
 
For good rotors contact Peter C. at World Wide Auto Parts, (nosimports.com) in Madison Wisconsin. He only sells the good stuff.

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago. My position was, and still is, that the ostensible reason for this "premium" item was technobabble. I'd also like to know how they justify continuing to sell their ordinary rotor in view of their own claim that it is flawed.

The lack of a spring to keep their standard rotor tight is indeed a defect, in my opinion. (I don't know if the "premium" one has a spring.) I suppose one could chalk it up to the general, low level of quality in available replacement parts for our cars. This is one reason why I encourage people to look to some of the independent parts suppliers instead of the usual suspects. More trouble, I know, but at least it might pressure the big operations to make some efforts in the direction of quality. They need it.
 
I agree with Steve 190%. The quality is lacking. It is really easy to buy from the big boys--using the internet and all. It would have taken a lot longer to get the car to the point that it is. But, I would have not had to "redo" things that should not have ever had to be redone. Still working on the those things, by the way.

Jeff at Advanced is making his own rotors. He sent me one and asked to try it out for awhile. He wants to see how good they really are. He thinks that they are probably the best available.

Very interesting; I didn't know that. I'd like to see what he's produced. Might buy one, if only just to see what they're like.

You know, it shouldn't be that difficult for anyone with a small lathe to make things like this. Indeed, I've made all the shafts and bushings for rebuilding my SUs. One problem, however, I noticed recently: I got a distributor cap and found it wouldn't fit the distributor! (Three guesses where I got it.) After making some measurements on that cap and two others I had sitting around, I realized that a lot of these aftermarket caps simply are not made to the same dimensions. This explains a lot of things like not being able to find a rotor that works, or having to sort through a whole lot of them to find one that works. Essentially, when this happens, you are trying to find an off-size rotor that fits an off-size cap. What a disaster!
