Distributor Removal

Im full of posts today. I was just wondering if I pull my distributor by removing the 2 mounting bolts if that will mess up the timing where it is set. I need to remove the distributor base and seal it up with some gasket sealer from some small oil leakage that may or may not be coming from that point. Im not sure if that will disrupt the timing?

I would just make sure that everything is marked very well on the shaft and the block. That way if anything happens from there you will be very close to having it back into time where it was. Also not position of rotor so its not 180 out.
I had a lot of dizzy problems a while ago and trying to not change time but change the angle of the dizzy. I ended up needing to move the dizzy 90degrees and marked the block took a compass put it back in, fired right up. So i dont see why you shouldnt be able to do it with what you are doing.

Stupid alignment trick #48.

Make a straight mark over the parts that require alignment with Whiteout (yep, the old typewriter correction stuff in a bottle) or a grease pencil. It should stay well enough for you to line things right back up when you go for reassembly.

I suspected a leak at my dizzy shaft last year and dinked around with adding an 0 ring on it, in the end it was the spin on oil filter adapter that was leaking and blowing back in that area.

Even when you remove the 2 dizzzy bolts, it appears that slots that hold the base to the engine can move slightly. Timing will not vary unless you loosen the pinch bolt however can anyone confirm that removing the two screws doesn't present any risk of base shifting thus changing timing some.

That is the point of marking it. You mark the shaft, bracket and block. That way everything is in the same position at the end. This way I would feel comfortable saying there is little to no risk. If you wipe away the mark then there may be a problem. If you dont like the one mark make a couple on each side. Either way if that mark is on there when it is together when it is taken apart and put back together if those marks are all in alignment then there will be no change in time.

There should be a gasket under your distributor pedestal. This gasket is important as it sets the clearance between the drive dog and the dizzy. I would not recommend putting pooky there.

If you are getting an oil leak in that area, the most likely culprit is the oil pressure sender. Check that out before messing with your dizzy.

Sorry, I don't see how you could have a dizzy oil leak, keep looking.
