Distributor Lubrication

As with anything else of this nature... I would use a bit of assembly lube.

are you speaking of the distributor its self or the drive thats in the block and runs on the cam gear? the dist itself I belive gets no oil from the engine, and I would definately oil the tach drive gear since its plastic and NLA

A couple of drops of motor oil on the distributor shaft every other oil change is all you need to do to keep it healthy.

George,

Take a look at my distributor disassembled here and the gear for the tach about 2/3 through the page. It looks like Jeff uses Mobil 1 red lube. I'm not sure, but it looks like it.

Distributor overhaul

I also use a bit of assembly lube on the cam that the points rest on. In my experience, long hot drives with no lube there will cause wear on the thingy that rides on that cam.

Maybe the original style didn't need this but the red plastic version seems too. Come to think of it, didn't points used to come with a little capsule of lube for this very purpose?

Yep, they did and you are right on the periodic lubrication of the distributor cam.

Hey great info guys, thank you! Paul; great pics, nice job! My minor rebuild seems to have worked fine, drove the car today! Now for my next questions; tell me about electronic ignition please...(see new post, thanks)

Nope, original manual mentions lubing the point cam; as well as putting a drop or two under the rotor.

Some versions of points even came with a felt wiper to keep the cam oily.
