Distributor Drive Dog Removal

Hello

Are there any tricks for remving the pin that holds the distributor (25D) drive dog in place? I have been pounding on the sob for a while now with no success...

Thanks

Myles

You need a drift or punch of almost the same, but slightly smaller diameter. Then, rest it on the table and tap it. Use a little PB blaster or the like also.

Look carefully, I believe some of the TRactor motors had tapered pins. They only come out one way. Look to see if one end looks bigger than the other end.

I actually have a "stubborn pin" punch made from a broken normal punch; where the part that pushes the pin is only 3/16" long or so. Once it starts the pin moving, a regular punch finishes the job. Dress the end up so it's flat with sharp corners, so it doesn't try to spread the pin and lock it tighter into the hole.

You'll want something metal with a hole in it to back up the dog. I generally use the vice jaws, but a stout nut laid on the bench would probably work as well. And using a BFH (3+ lbs) helps too; as the shock is what loosens things up.

So I can remove the shaft from the housing to check the bushing, clean everything etc... As usual what seems to be a simple job is not... Thanks for your suggestions, the end of the pin is starting to look a bit mangled so maybe I've tightened it up. May be time for a bigger hammer. I have also been tempted to reach for the drill but have resisted so far...

If I were you, I think I would call someone who does this routinely, like maybe Advance. Could be doing more harm than good.

Myles,

With all due respect, that is usually the first indication of a larger problem, i.e. disassembly procedure. I think that a bigger hammer may result in a cracked housing or worse and neither option is good with the supply of these parts getting more scarce by the day.

This is a picture of a 22D distributor completely disassembled and the pin is uniform in diameter. Yours may or not be the same. You should give Jeff at Advanced Distributors a call tomorrow and he can tell you exactly what to do.

Myles, in the "for what its worth department" mine also was the same diameter. Had no trouble getting it out. I have since sent all the parts to Advance to check fix, if needed, and rebuild. I decided that even though I'm a resonably good wrench, I don't have the nessary skill sets for the distributer so it went off to the experts.

Good luck, Tinkerman
