Distributor Cap and Plug wiring

If that is a 1500 cc engine it is correct.
 
Just to be clear. It is correct in the picture? mgbmedic's post about the firing order is throwing me off. Is the firing order in the picture 1-2-4-3 or am I reading that wrong?
 
rotor turns counter-clockwise... Looks right to me.
 
see nothing wrong there.
 
Did you bring it up on compression on #1 and check to see which plug-wire socket the rotor was pointing at, then check wires for correct firing order? (1-3-4-2 counter clockwise)

I got a chance to play around with it some more on Sunday with my Dad. The PO installed an electronic ignition unit under the distributor cap. We replaced the plugs but we are getting absolutely no spark when turning the car over.

Would the coil or the electronic ignition piece be the most likely problem? Or quite possible something I haven't even thought off yet...
 
Time to start tracing electricity from the ignition to the spark plugs - & I'm not real good at that....somewhere along that line, you'll find the point where it just stops...you're correct: either the coil or ignition unit will be the prime suspects.
 
Think I would test coil. Have some one turn it over while holding the coil wire almost to ground. hehe, Insulate yourself. Least you will find out if you have fire.
 
Let's go back to basics first, check to see if there is 12 volts to the coil when the key is on. Then make sure the coil is wired properly. If you change the pos and neg around trouble. Then look to see if you put the rotor in (don't laugh I didn't once and it took hours before someone said what is this <holding up the rotor>). If all those are ok then check for coil to distributor cap, if that is good then dist to spark plugs.

Just to give a little more background. We push started the car a week or so ago to get it home and it started. I was able to drive it the 12 miles or so home (though it was running very rough). I since have put in a new battery and installed new plugs. It seems that if I was able to start the car to get it home, the ignition system had to have been working correctly at that point. After installing the new battery, is it possible that it shorted out something along the ignition path?
 
Better word might be "probable"
 
I think I said before I had a similar problem and it turned out to be bad plug wires. Less than $20. Try that.

Well written article! Should be studied by neophites and put in every shop manual. It makes the system easily understood.
