Distributor Advice

Hi -

Ok I know this question is for the Atlantic, but that's basically the same thing as a Healey 100 in tug-boat cloathing...

Anyway, both distys I have for the Atlantic are shot (the distributor is different than for a 100, it is very old a weird Lucas DVX4A). My choice is:

1) Send in the disty to Jeff at Advanced Distributors for a full rebuild with Pertronix EI put in, etc etc... I estimate cost will be about $300 all in.

2) Buy a 123ignition unit from Erik Frenken in the Netherlands for about 300+ euro. Brand new, 16 pre programmed advance curves with individual cylinder auto adjust timing functionality... making it very very smooth running... + standard bosch cap and rotor.

I think I'm leaning towards the 123 but I was wondering if any of you have an opinion on this?

Alan

healeynut, yes drop in a ford 302! nah just kiddin. i put the petronics in my bj7 love the heck outa this thing, but the 123- is also wonderful but its at least twice the price and for what youll be using that engine for do you realy need to spend all that extra money? i think thats the call here. both these units have been tested using very sloppy dist. units i.e. lose bushes and shafts and they tend to compensate for the errors amazingly well. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

It sure would be nice if the dizzies were interchangeable between the A90 and the 100. If that is the case, I’d think about getting the 123, putting it in the Healey and moving that distributor over to the A90.

Unfortunately with this old distributor the body is coming loose from the shaft bush body, so nothing short of a total rebuild will do. That means the cost factor will be about the same as the 123. Since I'll be using this car for a daily driver of sorts, I think going with the 123 is probably the way to go.

Greg - the distributors are different, but essentially interchangeable. Since the A90 has a compression ratio of about 6.9:1 and has a milder cam than the 100, it has a different advance curve, so that's where the interchangeablity ends... I guess I'm leaning towards the 123 simply for ease of use black box functionality.
