A Wethersfield Connecticut family enters a contest sponsored by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), and wins a trip to the newly-opened Disneyland out in California.

Things that pop to mind in this three part film: 8mm silent home movie, Davy Crockett hats and jackets, neighborhood families, women in skirts, heels and hats, men in baggy trousers, a Super-G Constellation flying from Bradley Airport (Connecticut), to Idylwild, then to St Louis, then to Los Angeles, first class in the rear of the plane, box lunches for "tourist" class, Hollywood bus tour, Universal Studios tour, ferry to Catalina Island, and of course ... Disneyland!

Our own family did the same trip to Disneyland, also in 1956, but by car (we didn't win the 3M contest!). I remember like it was yesterday: the ticket booths at the entrance, the Mickey Mouse clock, steam train, Skyway cablecar, Autopia, hippo attack on the "Congo" flatboat ride, ice cream, etc. Can't believe I remember all that.

Lots of memories here - especially if you're a young guy born in the 1940s like me!

One of my childhood heroes was Davy Crockett. Had the requisite coonskin cap and my iteration of "Ol' Betsy", but the family never made it out to Disneyland. The old TV program that became "The Wonderful World of Disney" was a staple in our household, as was the "Mickey Mouse Club".

Went to Anaheim for a convention in '79 and visited my "Mecca". What a disappointment! Guess I got too old...

But still glad I finally got to experience it.

My folks took me out there in '58 or '59.
I don't really remember much of it, but recall " sitting on the moon"
for a picture souviner, that I still have.
My wife and I went to Disney world in '76. That was fun.

I must confess... I had one of those coonskin Davy Crocket hats when I was a kid... we all had them right? (and decoder rings!)

women in skirts, heels and hats, men in baggy trousers,

These are Disneyland from the mid-60s, and I notice the same thing even then (see below - they are posted on a Disney-related forum and I was forced to watermark them). I go to Disney World a few times a year and the difference is (obviously) startling. It's also incredible how everyone got along without strollers back then. I went to Disneyland a lot when I was a little kid and have lots of pictures of me walking around. My how things change

Scott - in that first picture ... am I just imagining a "Little British Car" in the lower right corner?

T.
PS - third picture. When's the last time anyone saw women wearing such brightly colored dresses?!?

Which reminds me... I acquired some colour slides, about one year ago, from a southern Alberta family who traveled extensively... Among the slides are some photos of Disney Land (ca. I believe late-1950's), I haven't really scanned them yet but... Great stuff here in this thread!

Yup - it's an MGB

Couple more - mid-60s... keep in mind too, it originally cost only $1 to get in, $3.50 by the mid-60s. Admission to rides and certain attractions was by ticket; 5 different tickets were available (A-E), the bigger and more popular attractions were higher letters and smaller attractions were lower letters. Now, over 50 years later, Disney fans still refer to the top rides as "E-Ticket" attractions

I've got some color slides taken at Disneyland not long after it
first opened.Interesting on how much different things were back then-
especially Tomorrowland.
