ended up buying this LG as well - and likewise won't be worrying about the app - but had the features we wanted, very good reviews and a decent price.
 
We have Alexa and Siri, Smart appliances and lights and locks in our houses. Maybe I have watched too many movies, but even if you have just seen 2001 a Space Odyssey" and any of the Terminator movies you know where this is all headed. "Siri, unlock the front door" (silence) "Siri, open the garage door" "I don't think you should go anywhere now Dave"

I can't accept being either the 'passenger' in a self-driving vehicle or a commodity in a networked database looking for a quick tuna salad recipe.

I can safely say; there's another solution looking for a problem!

I'm gonna need to look about and come up with a worthless gizmo to market. An internally lit toilet seat comes immediately to mind... but that's already been done. :smirk:

We have had our Bosch dishwasher for about 17-18 years I think and it's been very reliable (and very quite) except for a couple of years ago, when the heater stopped working. I was able to do the repair myself which involved re-soldering a connection in the control unit. No idea what we'd get if/when this one craps out for good, but I know that I will not care one whit about having my dishwasher equipped with wifi (and I don't need one that I can talk with)
 
The GE Monogram dishwasher that we just replaced lasted 29 years! I hope the LG that we just got lasts half that time.
 
I have been without one all summer and have had to manually wash all my dishes, luckily my last dish washer just hit nine years and should be ready to start washing all of my dishes soon.

Impressive though we will be moving long before that. part of this was not buying a 10 year solution to a 5 year problem.

That is a very logical way of approaching the purchase.
Just a heads-up... the keyboard on the LG is very sensitive; a light touch is all it takes.

:grin: Retirement just waves around the corner every once in a while - about 5 years from now - all being equal. Living in Toronto we have no desire to stay in the city and there is far too much equity in the house. I can't say that every decision is made with retirement in mind, but, occasionally. (even work - recently I had an opportunity to pick up another qualification - a little pricey mind you - cost benefit analysis said, "nope this I don't need to learn." :thumbsup:
 
When we were building our house a long time ago and the dishwasher decision came up. I said "I thought we were raising 2 dishwashers" My wife and the friend helping us to build both fell about laughing.
We got a dishwasher and I saw the logic in it as the years went by. One daughter was the master of I will let this soak a while. Everything had to soak a while.
The new dishwasher is mainly a drying rack.

David, you reminded me of my own youth. Growing up, my sister and I were the dishwashers. Only after we were both gone did my parents finally get an electric one.
 
I had a pump/motor go out in our 20 year old Maytag, a $200 Amazon purchase replaced it, it wasn't that hard, YouTube videos are helpful, though I wished I had done more research before I took it apart, as time was wasted on the dissassembling the pump unit being replaced (thought I needed to take off more than I did to get it apart).

P.S. love my wife as she was totally in favor of saving money on the repair vs. getting a new shiny thingy.

This is a double-edged sword, at least here. If a gizmo goes down,the expectation is that I'll fix it instead of spending on a new unit. After forty years of being "Mr Fixit" I've started farming some of the stuff out, replacing others. It hasn't sat well in some instances.
 
Seems the wives don't understand that when you get older, replacing is easier as we want the cars done so we can enjoy them, before they sell them for what we told them they were worth! :angel2:
