Hey guys, I normally don't post in the Rover section but I have a couple of questions. Recently I found a LR Disco for $1000. It's in pretty decent shape except for the engine (suprise, suprise). Anyway, I was thinking of replacing the engine with something a little bit more reliable and cheaper to work on like a small block Chevy. I have found someone who makes trans adaptors and motor mounts but I haven't found any other adaptors such as PS pumps, A/C, alt, etc.... Does anyone know of anyone who does make such things or has a kit of some sort? Also, has anyone actually done it? I'm not looking to make anything special, just a nice ride.

The Disco engine is a small block Buick, why change to a Chevy? You can buy used engines that are in good shape from the Northern California Land Rover Club and others, cheaper than a conversion and still have the American V-8 engine. The engines are reliable in the Disco 1 and only will be as good as the owner who maintains it. Regular maintenance isn't that expensive when you do it yourself and aftermarket parts are everywhere.
 
I knew the Rover engine was based on the old Buick/Olds 215 and I have no problem with replacing it with another Rover engine. This would be the easiest swap to do. The BIGGEST problem is cost. The cheapest used engines I have seen start around $1500 and go up from there. Small block Chevys can be had a dime for a dozen. What about a Buick V6? Do the ancillary drives bolt up to these engines? I'm just looking at all options and apprectiate ANY information anyone can give.

I picked up a 3.9l disco engine from a wrecking yard last year for $500. I didn't even have to beg, I just showed them an advert from a competing wrecking yard in Seattle with one for $350 + shipping. I think that if you look around you can find them quite reasonable. Not sure about MS but I know that TX and OK have a lot of land rovers around and parts should be easy to source.

I get my parts from one of our vendors, Gold Coast Rovers.
