Direction flasher

The flasher unit on my AH '63 BJ7 failed,it was the original one with the L shaped bracket used to secure it to the frame.A new 'off the shelf'replacement works except the pilot light is on permanently when the ignition is on. It winks as it should when the indicator is operated. On the new one the B letter is replaced by an X. The P and L are as the old one. Is the problem to do with the cars being positive earth ( tho. the unit does not appear to need to be earthed) Do I need a negative earth if such an animal exists?

I am using a generic Stant 550 and it works just fine. I think Dave used another heavy duty generic and it also works fine. I don't think the polarity matters on the Stant 550. Some of the generic universal heavy duty ones have a plastic see through can and contain electronic parts that may be polarity sensitive. I noticed this when I was looking at the auto parts store
and that is one of the reasons that I chose the Stant 550 as it appeared to be old fashioned technology instead of electronic components. The old fashioned technology, ( bimetal heated mechanical relay ), like the original flasher, is not polarity sensitive.
 
Used one of the see thru once where it could be seen in lieu of a light on the dash for compliance purposes!
