While looking at a '56 chevy I noticed the dip stick was painted an off-white. The owner said the PO had painted it so he could tell where the oil level was since the oil was the color of the metal. It was some kind of epoxy paint. Sounded good to me. I've been known to double and even triple dip and I check the oil very often. Has anyone done this and what kind of paint is recommended with hot oil. It did make the oil level stand out.

Yes I"ve done it, but I used a powder coated aluminum rod. I used a matte black finish, as it shows the "wet line" regardless of the oil color. I use the same thing for my fuel cell, with calibration marks on the aluninum rod I use to indicate fuel quantity. (Different rod than the oil quantity one.)

I would be happy just to find a dipstick the right size, the PO having customized mine.
Anyone know where I can get one: all the suppliers seem to have "NA" in the catalogues.

You'll have to find a used one. It took me a year but finally got one on ebay.
