TR2/3/3A Differential housing spreader

I just removed my differential carrier with a couple of levers and no spreader. It came right out but did require a bit of force. I did this on an old spare unit for practice. I have done some non-Triumph units in the past the same way and put them back in with a dead blow hammer. So the question is, can I do this with my better unit without doing harm or should I try to make the spreader?

I've never needed one. The old Chevy 12 bolt and Vette diffs used to be pretty tight, but I could still tap them out without a problem...for the 10 or 20 iterations it would take to get the mesh pattern correct. In comparison the little TR dif is a piece of cake!

Look at the bottom of post #23 and you'll see how I get the TR chunk out. Takes all of 2 seconds. Just be sure to have some padding under when you tap the axle tube...as the chunk will drop right out! Putting back in is a matter or tapping with a rubber/wood/brass mallet once all the parts are lined up.
 
+1 pry it out, tap it in.


OTOH, making a spreader is easy enough. Couple pieces of flat iron and some big turnbuckles from the hardware store. Just be careful to not go too far and permanently distort the case.
