Der Benz decided to start dripping coolant. A funky 2" piece of 45mm hose between t'stat housing and pump was swollen and wet, so naturally that got the first "Ah-HA!"... wrong. Apparently she was overstressed by the "Three Laps of Sebring". In addition to being the menopausal hot/cold, wrinkled, prattling old lady she's been she suddenly couldn't hold her water. After the by-pass hose replacement we thought the drama was over. Then the pump inner seal/bearing let go dramatically on first heat cycle. Driveway covered with coolant... soooo... two hours spent yesterday fiddling a new pump into the poor dear. Odd bit is: the pump had obviously been replaced at some point, as there was NO gasket fitted and a ton of some semi-soft unrecognisable goop had been used to glue it all together. Sorta like plumber's putty. It apparently held for years! She's now sportin' a shiny-new pump, some new "Zebra" clamps and no more drips.

Horsemits dubbed her the antithetic "Incontinental" during this episode. Sheesh.

I think the guy who replaced that thing was a "certified" plumber. I had to HAMMER the old pump out. Virtually "potted in" with the stuff. Amazing.

Maybe that was a "glue in" unit that you removed? Hope that you took the same care in fitting the new pump.
You are probably lucky that no one phoned the haz-mat team out on you over the little spill!!

A few years ago my parents were returning from a road trip in their '85 Mercedes Turbo Diesel. In the middle of Montana, the water pump started to leak. They called their Mercedes Mechanic and he told them to head on home, just down shut it off until they got bak to Northern Colorado. Pretty easy to do since you don't have to shut diesels off to refuel. So they had an uneventful, but basically non-stop return trip from central Montana to Fort Collins. When they pulled into the parking lot at their mechanics shop, where I was waiting to shuttle them home, and finally turned the car off. It drained all its coolant right then and there. They picked it up the next afternoon and there were no other realated problems.
 
Yeah Steve, I took a good look into the bay of one of the V-10's... Couldn't identify a THING except the TWIN Bosch airflow meters... they're electronically "mated for life" and can only be changed out in "$et$" according to my Panzer fixin' pals. At $2+K ~apiece~!!

Their First Step in repairing those things is a WALLET BIOPSY on the customer!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif


I'll need to look into the "glue in" pumps. Seems they last a good long time! I potted this one in with RTV. Even had some new bolts lyin' around wot fit right into that aluminium housing...bit hard t' start, tho. That IS a BSP fastener'd car, right? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
 
I reckon plumbers putty is to plumbers what duct tape is to the rest of the mechanical world. I have a big tub of it for domestic crises - never thought to use it in the car though!

Glad to hear Diesela is back running right.
 
We've got some stuff at the Toyota Garage that Toyota referrs to as "FIPG" sealant. I can't remember right off what that stands for, but I DO know it's some awsome stuff. We use it for all kinds of stuff. and , for instance, removing an oil pan that was installed with it takes a good amount of persuasion.
I hardly use RTV anymore, unless it's something I need to get apart again.
 
Now you tell me...

Would this FIPG stuff meld well with a NaziVagen or would she need anti-rejection drugs from now on? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
 
I don't see why not. It's not like the germans and the japanese have a long history of enmity now is it?
