That on the eve of a long trip every single sound the car makes sounds ominous.

I hear those noises every time I chime one up, regardless of the trip distance. :jester:

And that's the advantage of taking a long trip in one. After a couple of days in the cockpit you come to KNOW what they all are, and when something is really wrong, you know it.

That said, I've been able to eliminate all the rattles and squeaks from the car except those emanating from the drive train. No bumps or clanks come from the suspension are there either. The one that took me the longest to get rid of turned out to be a hex wrench that someone had let fall between the outer body and the inner fender well in the front driver's side. I had dropped a nut down there and in the process of contorting my arm to get the nut I felt the tool. It doesn't even fit anything on the car so I have no idea what it was doing there other than rattling.

...and that's a good reason to have a rare earth magnet on a telescoping wand. They'll even pick up something as heavy as a ratchet wrench.

I don't know how on earth you got your arm in there?!?

I don't listen as much as I "feel". She'll tell you what's wrong if you know her voice. This is soemthing my boss doesn't understand. He drives stuff with bearings screaming and hasn't a clue. I've told him several times to let me get to know the cars and they'll be better but he won't.

Oh, I have one of those wands in the tool box, but of course they stick to the car as well as things stick to them. But you have to know what you're looking for and a hand has FEEL.

To reach in you kinda use the wrong side and and twist back and under. It's a contortion based on need.

I have a wife like that, too... makes for a very unsettled night-before....

In our house I'm typically the one making ominous sounds and even if my wife did I wouldn't tell her.

Love it when wife makes sounds at nite, means she is still with me. No LOL, I am quite serious.

My father-in-law is the same way. He drove every car he's ever owned into complete immobility inside of five years, all because he doesn't listen to them or pay attention to what they do.

Don't even let me start on the time he topped up his master cylinder with ATF, didn't tell anyone when the brakes stopped working, and continued to drive it that way for weeks. :wall:
