Just bought a new Kent Cam 731 (fast road) on Ebay with the intent to use it in a 948cc Bugeye engine. Now I'm not sure that it's going to work in a 948. May be more appropriate for a 1275. Advice??

Good question, The oil pump, and drives changed over the year, The 948 and 1098 were pin drive, the US 1275 were all star drives, then later with the A-series Minis, they cam out with a slot drive. In the 1275s the star drivve and slot drives are completely interchangable with the correct oil pump of course. I know we though about using a 948 pin drive cam in a 1275 race engine, because the 948's race cams was al over the nubers we were looking for, and they used to make a oil pump to do this, but it's no longer availalbe, and then was told we could make a oil pump spacer to make it work in 1275, scrapped the whole idea,, and just boulgt a new 1275 race cam like we needed. So based upon that, it's got me thinking that the something different in the leght of the cam/oil pump set up form the 948 to the 1275, if we needed a spacer to make the pin drive stuff work in 1275, that would lead to beleive the star drive in the 948 would be too long, I'm sure it could all be made to wrok, and maybe someone will chime in who has actually done this. If you got a engine block down, you could try it, but I would suggest this is where also the thicker 1275 back palt comes in to play as well. I've got used 1275 oil pumps and 1275 back plates if you play with it, hollar at me and I can see if I can send you some stuff to check it all out, who knows we might learn something. Thats the problem with the 948, almost everyone has abandoned it in the aftermarket performance world, 948s are a dying breed all except the concourse guys.

Found this on APT's webpage.

<span style="font-style: italic">"Star drive cams have 1/2" lobe width, and can be used in a small bore engine that originally used a pin drive cam by using oil pump spacer plate # OPS and an extra gasket #OPG.
Inline engines may need to have the backplate machined to fit the larger 1275 pump cover, or epoxy the pump cover onto the other side of the engine back plate.

A+ slot drive type drive cams can be used in any 1275 engine in place of a star type drive."</span>

It would seem to follow that if there is a way to use star drive in place of the pin drive and that you can use a slot drive instead of a star drive, then there must be a way to use a slot drive in place of a pin drive on smaller bore engines.

Wait a minute! The 731 camshaft is a pin drive as is the oil pump on a 948cc engine. See photos on the ebay listing. www.tinyurl.com/3jk9ux

Forget my philosophical ranting above. Still not sure it will work, however.
