Did anyone else lose the count

Think Basil took it off when he switched to the new Beta - or the new Beta lost it.
 
Well, FYI, I am just experimenting with turning them off to see if the forum will stop locking up as much as it has been recently. In the admin area there is a warning about turning those on because apparently it requires quite a lot of SQL database queries, which if enough people are hitting things just right, can really slow the forum down, and sometimes almost cause it to lock up completely.

"Warning: This can cause excess load and contribute to slow speed."

So, I want to run it like this for a while to see if the forum speed is any better and if the lock-ups are reduced some in frequency.
 
I've occasionally noticed a slow down and even some lock ups. Happened after the count was turned off as well. Same events on two different computers in two different locations using two different service providers. So don't think it was local.

I'm not certain that it's going to make much difference, but it seems when the forum does get locked up, when I look at the precessed going on, it always seems to be MySQL that is eating up all the resources. So I thought reducing the load on the database might help some. Time will tell.
 
My take: losing my email updates, and now the thread "new posts", makes it impossible for me to tell when a thread is updated (new post added).

I have to manually go to each forum, then open each thread, to see if there's an update. Only other way is to write down the timestamp of the Last Post in each thread. Over and over again.

Not good. Any work-around?

For some reason when I check back here, like at lunch, new posts are not shown. Usually there is a number in brackets that lets me know which ones I need to read.
 
A real drag, where's the counters? I would rather have a slow forum and know what is new, then having to guess what I read.

<span style="color: #009900">Once more with feeling </span> - I think I've mentioned this before - the lack of email notifications of new replies when using Watched Topics is a known "bug" in this BETA version of software and they are working on a fix (I hope) and it should be fixed (I hope) with the next Beta release. I can't go back to the old version without loosing every single post that has been made since the upgrade. You should still see the little watch glass next to topics. If not, try removing a topic from your watched list then re-adding it.

I have turned the new post tracking back on for the forum summary level (You may need to clear cookies to see it working again). This should allow you to see numbers in parans ( ) that tell you how many new posts and new replies are in each forum since your last visit (when viewing the forum summary).

What I have <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> turned on is the tracking of new replies in the forums themselves. However, while you may not see a number, when you visit a forum, IF there are new replies to a thread, you will see the little folder icon to the left of a topic turned "yellow." Ok, so that will not tell you the exact number of new replies in that topic, but it will tell you there is at least ONE new reply since your last visit.

If you then click on a topic, it will take you to the first new unread reply. This should be a sufficient work around. Turing on the new reply "tracking counts" for the individual forums is a huge resource hog and does slow things down a lot, especially if there are a large number of members on the site at the same time.

However, you should still be able now to see which threads have new replies, just not how many - but as I said, when you enter a forum, you should still be able to see which threads have new replies by seeing which threads have the yellow icon lite up....then clickinig it will take you to the first new reply in the thread. I'm not sure that seeing a number tells you much more if you already can tell there is at least ONE new reply in a tread.


PS: IF YOU ARE NOT SEEING THE NEW POST/REPLY NUMBERS WHEN VIEWING THE FORUM SUMMARY PAGE, CLEAR YOUR COOKIES AND TRY AGAIN.

Read my reply above - you don't have to "guess" - if you see a yellow folder icon next to a thread/topic then you know there is at least one reply you have not read in that thread - click the topic and you go straight to the first unread reply.
 
I was using the highlighted folder indicator as a stop gap. Like the compromise, works for me. Hopefully it will alleviate some of the slowing issues.
 
OK - didn't realize that a yellow folder icon on the left side of a topic title meant new posts in that thread since my last visit. I was still looking for "update numbers".

Now I see the yellow flag. I also cleared my cookies, was logged out, forgot my password and felt silly as I tried to remember it.
