MGB Did 80 mgb have any transmission probs

Okay guys I just had a shop put in a new clutch and seals in the back of the motor. I was driving it before it went to the shop and bam it just started to shudder and the clutch was out. Well now i get it from the tranny guys and the motor wont turn over. If you have the clutch pushed in and the engine in neutral it will turn over a little. My father thinks it may be the main shaft in the tranny locking up and thats what caused the clutch to fail in the first place. Any advice would be good. car has 60k

Hmmm, sounds nasty. Are you saying that the engine won't even turn over when you try to start it? First thing I would check is the battery and then the starter motor. Gearbox is supposed to inneutral anyway when trying to start the car, but you are not supposed to have the clutch in to start it. I am not aware of MGBs having transmission problems, but the way you describe the clutch just quitting certainly doesn't sound usual.

OK!! First off, put the tranny in neutral, and try and move it. If it will not move,as in the engine is still hooked up, then you should go back and try and disengage the clutch, if it will push then, you obviously have an engine problem, or mybe a starter problem!! Lets start by eliminating some of the potentials!! GOOD LUCK!!! Hopefully, it is a bad starter, but I doubt it!!

Couple of good ideas but lets go back to KISS Rule

"Just back from tranny guys.....": Is the tranny to body ground strap in place??

No no fellas. let me go into more detail. Before going into the tranny shop I was tunning my new weber, and as i was going down the road I could feel it start chatterintg abit every time i would shift gears. I only drove it about a mile more. But by the time I got home it was running but not engaging the clutch. So i take it to these guys. One day I go up and look at it and they show me the old clutch that was chewed up. Ok the kit I bought was the one with the new rear engine gasket, rear main seal, clutch, bearing, cover and other misc goodies. Well my father drug it home because after the clutch and seal job it would not crank. Well not only will it not crank it wont turn over. This has nothing to do with the battery , starter, etc. I cant even put my big breakover on the motor and turn it over from the front crankbolt. My father was thinking that the pilot shaft in the tranny seized up, however I argued that with the clutch in and the car in nuetral, wouldnt it turn over. Im really at a loss to comprehend whats happend. The day I took the car to them I cranked it and let it warm up .

just a wild guess, but have you checked tranny alignment? could it be cocked? I'd try to loosen the tranny mount bolts and see if I could turn it over and if that didn't work I'd loosen the tranny bolts and try it again. If that don't work, time for the cherry picker

Certainly they would have checked the transmission when it was on the bench, right?? Try pulling out the starter and see if it is jammed somehow!!! If all is fine there, then maybe the throwout bearing was put in wrong!! I forget if the clutch plate can be put in backwards, but if it is doing things that are different than when it went in, they screwed up!!

Well guess what. Sure enough i loosen the engine today and it starts to turn. well we shall see. The guy said he doesnt want to give me a refund but he will fix it himself. I also noticed missing bolts, bolts in wrong spots with bigger nuts spacing them out so they would work, no cotter pin in the arm, and it leaked were they changed the fluid. Hmmm go figure.

Argue for a refund-the trans shop obviously did the job incorrectly. Do not let this place work on the car again, even if they claim they'll "put things right". If they couldn't do it correctly the first time, what makes them think they can fix it?
Then go find a shop that specializes in old cars.

Do you have a Better Business Burea or anything like that??? I'm sure you could alwas go the legal route, but that is seldom worth it!!

I'd also ask them what "fluid" they used in the gearbox. Typically the Bs use 20w50 engine oil. There has been much debate on this subject as some later car's owners manuals say to use 90W gear oil, but all the service manuals seem to call for 20w50 engine oil. Some shops put ATF in the gearbox because many modern transmissions specify its use. This is even more important if you've got an over-drive transmission (I don't think you mentioned that you do), using an inappropriate lubricant in those transmissions can lead to a bad slippage very much like a worn clutch.

Regardless, find out what they used in case you have to address that problem too.

Turns out they stuck a bolt into the lower stater that was 1 in to long and bent the flywheel. He took it graciously. Something about me being a cop and him owning a shop in his district got his attention.

Jason

Cops wouldn't do that would they???

Are you sure that the flywheel is bent?? What does this guy do for his real job, is he a clown???

Actually there new guy forgot to put the new alignment bushing and the owner was real appolagetic and said he just couldnt understand what the heck his mechanics was thinking. Oh and they did put the correct motor oil in it. Man there killing me. I got my new stainless brake lines and steering boots that I am ready to put on.

This is the reason I do all the repairs on my B myself. I realize this is impossible for some to do butI hear stories like this too often. I sympathize with you.Good Luck
