Has anyone installed a Denis Welch Steering Box?

If so, what are your thoughts about the pros and cons of the product?

Was it a standard ratio or a high ratio?

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Cheers Jeff

Denis Welch makes first-class stuff. I have several of his items, but not the steering box. I had to rebuild mine because of pitted bearing surfaces before he came out with his. I do have the high ratio box because I have an early BN4. I can tell you that it's fine at speed and gives the steering a great response. The trade-off is really heavy steering at parking speeds, especially with195-width tires. Unless yours is really trashed, I would seriously consider rebuilding and properly adjusting the one you have, rather than spending close to $2,000 for a new one (unless you race your Healey).

I too am interested in this as my steering leaves a lot to be desired

Also looking at rack and pinion conversion kits

I have a BN2 that I took through a restoration. The car had a BN1 steering box in it that was in pretty bad shape, and I wanted to upgrade. I first purchased an SC unit (on sale -- the later style) and went through the installation, only to find that the splines for the steering wheel were not machined correctly. I ended up removing the SC unit and sending it back. I then purchased the DWR unit. Great quality all around. Installation went smoothly -- everything fit like factory and the unit is great on the road. The DWR unit is clearly the way to go and worth every penny.

Thanks for the input. I ordered one yesterday, and the Brits apparently have forgiven us for the whole Independence thing, as DWR shipped it on the 4th of July.

Cheers,

Jeff
