Defrost vent openings?

Well after searching the forum, I used a box cutter and cut out the old gasket and removed the chipped (3 places and one crack) windscreen.
Once removed I see the source of the uneven defogging pattern I had noticed. The outboard ends of the openings are closed off. This is caused by the defog ducting curving in and closing it self off.
What to do?
It appears to be a plastic.
Should one just carve it to match the metal trim yielding the max opening?
Or should I make some small spacers on hold it apart that way?
Anyone else ran into this?
I am not removing the dash only replacing the windscreen.

Also are the 3 rounded bolts heads and washers originally painted or blackened or ?
Mine seem to have a reddish patina to them.
 
I can't visualize what you are saying but I think it is suppose to be that way. 1 side is really tight.
Maybe pictures can help.
 
FWIW, the defroster ducts on a Stag actually came originally with little spacers to hold them apart.

I think if you carve the duct opening, it will no longer fit as snugly against the dash, and part of the hot air will be lost. So I'd go with spacers. But I don't have any experience with a TR6, so I could be off-base.
 
I want to help, but I'm a bit confused. It seems
that you should not have to carve anything to fit
and operate properly.

The ducting hose will run from the heater to the dash
and affix to a plastic piece that joins them at the
underside of the dash. At the top is the metal finish piece on the dash pad where the air comes into the car. Could it be that the plastic piece has become dislodged under the dash and as you view from the top
something looks askew?

This baby is way up in there and rather concealed.
If you were to investigate, removal of the glovebox
might be a way to go. I think it would expose the
hose to the dash. You might be able to look up in there
and see it, but I could only appreciate its location
after I got a good look with other parts removed and out
of the way.

This is presuming you are discussing a TR6.

I could be way off base, here, because I'm not sure
if I understand what you're describing.

What I think has happened is the ducting that goes from the hose to form the oval shaped exit that matches the metal finish opening, has over time changed shape.
This has caused it to curl over and block or close off part of the exit opening, restricting air flow and not allowing the full width of the duct to blow air on the windscreen.
By placing a screw driver blade in the opening of the metal finisher and into the duct exit opening and moving outboard to where the restriction is, causes this curled over portion to spread or open.
My thoughts were to spread this instead with a wedge or spacer of some sort or to trim the curled over material to match the metal finisher opening.
Due to the way it is curled over, I thought triming it would match the duct to the opening and not really leave an opening or gap between the underside of the dash and the duct and would allow more air to flow onto the windscreen.
I hope this makes some sense.
