Definition of insanity

I heard this today and I was wondering who may have been the famous person to state it:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

I have seen that happen, (even here) so I know that it appears to be true, but I was wondering if anyone knew who coined the phrase?

I know it by heart. It comes to mind whenever I see my son-in-law.

So your son-in-law is a theoretical physicist? :jester:

See? It really IS all relative... :jester:

So, was Edison insane during the time he was trying to invent the electric light bulb?

No because he didn't try the same thing over and over - he used different materials each time trying to find a filament that would have the characteristics he wanted. Had he kept trying the same material over and over, then yes, he'd have been insane. :cowboy:

...and we'd be sittin' here in th' DARK.

Not so Doc.

There was work being done in parallel with the light bulb to perfect the long life candle. We probably wouldn't be in the dark, but the back light in your laptop monitor would not create such great images.
