.....STUPIDITY? Montoya's car hit the jet - engined
track dryer (filled w/jet fuel).
Track dryer burst into flames,"firefighters" arrive
on scene,fighting the fire below the dryer (no air packs).
One truck was where the fuel was flowing downhill - STUPID!!!
As this was a "Haz Mat" incident,you ALWAYS observe
the rules - "Uphill,Upwind/Contain the Hazard (Jet Fuel).
I hope these idiots get scrutised to the 3rd degree.
What if the fuel had ignited "Big Time",& the "firefighters"
had died?
I also observred "first responder" standing in the
jet fuel after the incident.

I see lawsuits in the future against NASCAR from the fire crew, if you can call them that, for their own stupidity. They are lucky , as they did just about everything wrong. It looked like plain water until the end. Lets spread the fuel out and make a bigger problem. Was that foam at the end? It was the thinnest foam I have ever seen.
 
How is it he managed to hit that truck in the first place? Were they under a green with the truck on the track? something looks fishy ....

It was under caution. JP had been in the pits complaining of vibration. They went underneath the car looking at driveshaft/differential/back end. The crew lets him go - he was catching up to the pack (still under yellow) and it breaks just as he approaches the trucks - spinning into and hitting the front truck.
 
I almost hate to admit that I watched a Nascar race.
Aside from a few incidents,it was like a parade.
And the Ford Fusions were just like my Wife's car.
Actually,I couldn't tell you which make/model they were with-
out the logos on them.
And the deal with not being able to cross the Yellow-
line,or be penalized - real racers use the whole track.

You mean your wife drives a 2 door rear wheel drive Fusion? I've never seen one off the track.

NASCAR loves to tell everyone how great their fire and saftey crews are, however, it seems to me that it took a long time for the first responders to arrive on scene. Then all they had to fight that fire with was hand held CO2 which they deployed too far away from the fire to be very effective. Then approximately 5 minutes until a 'real' fire truck is deployed and even then, as Doug said, they violated the basics of fighting that type fire.

IMHO, they got lucky that it wasn't worse that it was.
 
The "foam" was Tide laundry detergent. Applied after the fire was extinguished to wash down the track.

I also wondered why some were standing in jet fuel fighting from the bottom up.
 
I believe the right trailing arm broke free spinning the car.
