Reminder to sportscar race-fans, the 24 hours of Daytona (aka "Rolex 24") is on Speed through 1:30pm-est Sunday.

Live audio is available online here (thank goodness, Speed-TV is only in Spanish here and it's driving me nuts).

Thanks Scott. I'm playing it in the background right now.

They took Speed TV away from our "Basic" cable package in our townhouse (and I'm at our Summer house right now...we only have a roof antennae here).
We can only get Speed TV if we get "sports/entertainment" package full of "sports" I am not interested in and shows that I do not find "entertaining".

Watched a bit of it a while ago (English here). Gee, does that bring back memories. In '71, several of us from the VW club in New Orleans drove to Daytona and camped out in the infield. Slept maybe 2 or 3 hours that night (noise was incredible!), then drove back home when it was over. Never be able to do THAT again! But was it ever a good time! Porsche won big time, if I recall.

When I first got Direct-TV I had the same problem. Thankfully they changed their approach to selling the channel...I no longer have to endure or pay for football!

Been watching a while. I dunno, is it just me or does anyone else not enjoy the fact that 90% of the cars look the same and unless you know the number and/or colors of the particular cars, they all look the same and blend into one another. We need some variety besides exhaust note!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

Not like it used to be in the old days!! (he said sounding like an old codger!) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

Well, Mike, they are essentially "Spec" classes, so there isn't much visual variation anymore.
I know a lot of the participants, so it's enjoyable for me. I just hate the Speed channel coverage. Who cares about the band playing in the Pontiac Garage? And I noticed that they stressed the NAPCAR drivers in their promos, rather than the true endurance car guys.
Oh well. "Gentlemen, start your sponsors."
Jeff

I agree with both those comments. When they came out with the DP cars it really changed the race, and the following series. The first DP races were kind of a joke to watch. The "top class" were always being passed by Corvettes and such - yet would make up the time on another part of the track. I'm told that the following year they changed the rules for the lower classes, effectively slowing them down.

They also started pushing the NASCAR theme (I think that was the idea behind eliminating open-cockpit cars too), and all the local advertising neglected to talk about the race, but mentioned the NASCAR names as much as possible.

That "attitude" also tricked down to the local Daytona newspaper by the way...for years I read garbage like "the cardigan crowd is racing at Daytona this weekend, but the real racers will be here in a couple of weeks". /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

I have a friend who works on the Audi team, and I used to follow the series a lot when they were running (now I watch ALMS)...These guys are just getting too "generic" any more. I can see watching because of personal interests, but in order to attract and hold fans, they have to do something different or it will all be history one of these days!!

Maybe racing needs to provide something in addition to "spec" racing to recreate a little excitement. Some of the most exciting racing ever was the old, big-bore, ground shaking, free-for-all CAN-AM stuff of the late 60s!!!

I still watch today, it just doesn't rivet me to the screen!!

less than an hour to go! still very tight battles. Especially in GT.
YEEEEE HAWWWWW!!!
Does this race last ALL day??? hehehehehehe

Not a bad race... but I got a lot more excited watching some of the clips from '94 they showed. Ah well... the best news is my girlfriend fed me audio in English for the last hour or so /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Ah well, that's out of the system...Sebring is coming soon now though!!

What do they need headlights for at Daytona any more?
