Daughter's VW - coil pack?

My daughter has a 2002 Beetle. Lately it has started fine but over time (45 min to an hour) it starts to chug (her word) and loose power - the other day she had it with full gas pedal but couldn't go faster than 60 mph.

does this sound like a coil pack to you?
 
I should also say it is a 2 litre engine, non turbo with a 5 speed if that is relevant
 
Must all the chain parts stores will plug a code reader into your car for free. Should point you in the right direction.
