Datsun trans question

I may have found a trans from a member of a local Datsun Club, but he doesn't know what it originally was in. He got the drivetrain in trade, and it had a rebuilt dogleg 5 speed. I am seeing if he can verify the info on the trans according to the rivergate page. If that all checks out, I assume it will work? Or were all 5 speed dogleg's the same?

There are two basic Doglegs. One says 60 on the side (this is the better one) and one that says 63 on the side. The 63 can fit but not as easily as the 60.
The 63 also needs a different adapter for the driveshaft and I don't know if it is easily available.

Thanks guys, keep your fingers crossed it a 60 series. If so, I'll get a rebuilt trans for $200

Just don't send him a link to the RG page.

Sure sounds like air in the line to me.
Just bleed it and see

If its a 63 I'll pay you freight plus something for your time.

Really? What do you want a 63 for?

If you already have a Datsun motor anyway then it's not too hard.
I've got the 60 myself, but I know I could use a 63 if push came to shove in the Midget with the Datsun motor anyway.
With a bit of ingenuity you can get it going with your British motor too.
A little more work, but doable.

The 63 doesn't fit easily but is the strongest 5 speed. The datsun guys recomend it for a hot motor. I'm thinking HOT datsun motor!!

Ahhh... there's a comic in every bunch eh?

:jester:

Turned out it was a dogleg out of a 200sx. guess that does me no good.

Those may be better suited to a 1500 swap due to the larger bell housing but I don't know about heater shelf clearance. Billm?

The Datsun trannys with the big bellhousings (for 510's, etc) won't fit in a Spridget unless the cutting torch is used liberally- same issues as putting in a V8. I wouldn't even try.

I thought it was about the same size as the 1500 bellhousing. Oh well, you would know.

The small -63 (for the"A" engines) is the same size but the big -63 (for the "L" engines) is bigger, same gearboxes but different bellhousings (built in).

Same size as what? The small 63 and 60 is a lot smaller than the 1500 bell housing. That's why the flywheel needed to be cut down to fit, remember?
