Datsun 5-speed Gear lube recommendations needed

I know people are recommending synthetic, but what weight? I've got a bottle of 80-90.

thanks

The problem with Synthetic, if i remember Paul A.'s thoughts are that its so slick you can easily beat the synchros. i think its only to be used if you're driving in extremely cold situations... He puts in whatever the standard lube is for the datsun tranny.

Rivergate recommends Valvoline Synthetic gear lube, they don't specify a weight, if there is one.

My rebuilder suggested I use 30 wt.

Datsun manual calls for 2 3/4 pints of an API GL-4 (or equivalent) 90 weight gear oil.

Unlike the A-series transmissions, 30wt is wrong for a Datsun box. Simple 80-90 gear lube does the trick.

Absolutely agree.
Tried the rivergate recommended synthetic 90, and after a year and very little milage it would hang-up going back to 2nd. After adjusting and re-adjusting the clutch and re bleeding the system, I got a recommendation from someone with a great deal of experience with the 210 trans and he said to go back to 90wt valvoline gear oil.

Drained out the synthetic , added the valvoline with ~ 8oz of lucus (sp) trans treatment. and it has worked fine since with no other changes. luck on your project.

I have had too many friends with 210's have their transmissions hang-up when they have 90 weight in there so I always use 30 weight (non-detergent if I can find it) and have never had a problem. Of course I have to change it every couple of years but it works well so-far.

Shear strenght enabled lubes are needed in the 210 Tranny. You might get away with motor oil, but eventually it will catch up to you.

If 90w is causing a problem try lighter weight. Redline used to make a lighter oil, I think it was 75w.. But you do need a GL oil in these trannies for best operation. i.e performance and reliability.
