Is it true they will fit the rear Tr3 brakes? Is there an easy way to tell how much material is left on a used drum other than just eyeballing it?

A lot of that Japanese stuff (early) is basically a knock-off of LBC stuff. No way to really eyeball drum and rotor thickness. I did that kind of work in shops......and decades worth, yeah, I can tell when a 1946 Lincoln drum is paper thin, but you need to check the max od specs and use a drum micrometer.Nominal diameter is 228.6 mm or 9 inches. Max is 230 mm or 9.055". Larger 9" alloy drum are used on all S30 models (1971-1978 Fairlady/240Z/260Z/280Z).

They are not a direct fit, but can be modified to fit; provided you have the 9" rear drums (appx TS56377 and later). Center hole has to be enlarged, and IIRC the stud holes also have to be larger to fit a TR3. Some of the lip at the outer edge has to be removed as well; how much may depend on exactly which drums you get, and which TR3 brakes you have. The drums I got had two lips, and for the backing plates that were on TS39781LO (not originals), I had to remove most of both lips. Never did finish that project, the drums are still in the garage somewhere. So are the brakes for that matter, but the car is long gone.

If you want the aluminum make sure you check the specs of what you are getting, I looked into this and I think most of the aftermarket parts are cast iron, so you get the fins but not the weight savings.

I purchased finned aluminum drums for my TR4 from TRF some years back (P/N: HP 34), but they don’t seem to carry them anymore.
They are Brembo manufactured Datsun 240Z drums. TRF had them modified prior to sale since they fitted perfectly right out of the box.
Moss has finned aluminum drums (P/N 586-150), but they are for use on TR4A IRS -TR6. They mention that they could be fitted to earlier cars using 9” drums if the stud holes are enlarged.
