I have the Datsun 5 speed in my bugeye and after significant drives, I get a slapping noise when letting off the throttle. It sounds like the shifter hitting the surround and can be felt in the body of the car when putting my hand on it. I took off the surround and drove it....still had it. I looked in the trans tunnel for anything that could be hitting with a flashlight and mirror, and couldn't see anything. Is there something in the trans shifter area that could be worn and cause this? It seems to only do it in 4th and 5th gears.
 
I have the Datsun 5 speed also and I have had no problems like you have stated.

One thing to look for is the clearance between the yoke and the trans tunnel. Clearance here can be slim to none and a few folks have had interference issues, myself included. If this turns out to be your problem a few minutes of work with a pry bar (or a selection of real and/or improvised pry bars) will allow you to revise the contour of the sheet metal in the affected area and will eliminate the issue.

Causes of interference vary, as tunnel shape and abuse to the tunnel over time is individual vehicle-specific. Mine was kinda squashed down just a bit for some reason.

Do you have a "right-angle" speedometer cable adapter on your trans?
That might be an issue (or the speedo cable slapping the trans tunnel)

When Paul A. did my car and the end of the yoke hit the tranny tunnel ...... with was still up on the jackstands, with the engine running at idle, let out the clutch in first gear and ..... throw a broomstick up the tunnel. the yoke catches the stick and beats the tunnel out.. there's no other way to access the area of interference.

That was Paul's solution for years... .. Gerard I think had a 1/4" thick spacer to put at the pumpkin end of the yoke to move the other end further up the tunnel so that this "fix" isn't needed?....
 
If you have a grease nipple in the U-joint, it could be hitting the tunnel, although if only in 4th and 5th gear, may not be your problem.
 
I'll have to put it in the air this weekend and have a second look. Pretty hard to see in the tunnel for clearance, maybe I can get a better view from under the car. Thanks for the advice!

Oh yeah,.. it took a few tries to time it just right to catch the stick at just the right spot. As in "Let out the clutch ... NOW!" It came out all splintered up after we hit the "sweet spot".
