Dash support bracket repair

My dash support bracket (MOSS 633-455) has a corroded foot on the driver's side. I went to an aluminum welder to have it built up, but he believes it is not an aluminum casting as I had assumed. Has anyone repaired one of these?

I've had good success using these zinc aluminum repair rods both at work and at home. All you need is a propane torch and a stainless steel wire brush. Since the temperatures necessary to braze the aluminum is low, there's little danger of melting the original aluminum into a puddle.

However, if your welder guy doesn't think it's aluminum, then it might be zinc, which has a low melting point...about 790 deg. F., so using those zinc rods would be a little trickier, as there is the possibility of melting the bracket.
 
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind as I decide what to do. Who knew the TR6 would have so many "issues".

For those who are interested, another welder has looked at the dash support bracket and proclaimed it aluminum. He says that some aluminum castings are of poor quality, and may contain sand or other contaminants that make welding difficult. How could he insinuate such a thing on a fine motorcar such as this?? He will attempt a repair, and I will update you with what transpires. I well may be in the market for a used one yet.

O.K., here is the latest: I picked up the dash support, and the welder was able to attach a new base to the driver's side. He was not proud of the look, and it wouldn't win a prize, but seems solid. He agrees the casting is poor quality, with perhaps some magnesium, or sand, or air bubbles. At any rate, it is much better, and the weld will not be visible when installed. I do believe it is wise to reinstall it, as it supports the dash center, and reduces side-to-side flexing. (cowl shake). I am undecided on whether I will recover the support, or do a wrinkle finish, but there is no hurry, since I still have to take the tub off and etc...etc.
