Dash Rheostat

Turns out - or turns not - that the rheostat on both my 74 parts GT & my new roadster do not turn. My 73 GT does turn. Based on this information I assume that the 74's are both bad. So my assumptions therefore tell me to pull it from the 73 & put it in the roadster. In veiwing this ka-nob, how the heck does it come off in order to unscrew it and pull it outta da dash?

Does it have a hole to access a pin someplace? Like the '67?

...I thought the cars after '68 had it mounted onna column. Can't remember now.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

There is a small hole in the knob, you have to push in the locking pin on the shaft and then just pull it off,I would put some pb blaster on first, good luck. If you cant get it off ,I have spare that I would sell.

Yep, push pin in the side of the knob...I use nails to push it in...however, you can just remove the wires from the back & connect them together & always have the brightest lights....some of the electrical whizzes may chime in with a different idea though.

Thank you all. A small allen key works great for this if it is stuck in an odd position and you cannot get to the push pin.
I tested on the bad one on the dash that is out of the car first. After I removed the button, I tried turning it with a small adjustable wrench I no go. When I took the knob off the one in the roadster, I tried to turn it and it loosened up enough that now it works real goodlyish. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif The knob itself did nto give enough leverage to loosen it and I did not want to force it. Patience I tell ya!

Yay. Some CRC 2-26 electrical contact lube would be in order to give it a second lease on life.

I gotta figur eout where you guys get all this fancy lube, glue spray stuff.

CRC 2-26 can be found at Home Despot. In the electrical supply area.

Off to HD. What else should I stock to keep these buggers running?

P'raps that gallon can of Gunk carb cleaner? It even has a basket in it... or did the last time I got some.

Yep it does and lasts and lasts and lasts.

Carb cleaner at the HD? I'll have to ask about that one.

prolly not at Home De Pot. But it'd be a good idea to pick up some of that carb cleaner dip at your local auto parts store. the stuff is just plain awesome!

If I'd have known then what I know now, I would have just used that stuff to clean up my HS6 before I put it on. Instead, I cleaned mine with acetone and didn't like the results and recleaned it with carb dip...

What kinda chips does one eat with carb cleaner dip?? And should you serve Chianti and flava beans?? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

hmmmm... I'm thinking a ~very~ strong anti-acid, or maybe industrial strength "Gas-X" chips would go good with that sort of dip /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Home Despot doesn't carry good chips 'n dip. Ya gotta "Get in th' Zone" for a gallon o' Gunk.
