Dash project underway.....

Well, I had mellow yellow back in the garage for a total of 36 hours before it's instincts took it back to Erik's for what I hope to be the final project of the year.

I now have all of the gauges here at home to install in the cases that I painted in June, after a friend in CT bead blasted them for me. I will transfer my gauges to the new cases tomorrow and return them to Erik for installation on Monday, while I'm busy at work in CT.

There is a small road trip of three hours needed tomorrow to pick up a new TR6 accessory that will be stored for future use. After that is gauge cleaning 101.

While you're there, are you going to replace the passenger side crash pad? Looks to be a small crack in it. Any hint to the future TR6 accessory?

That is a new Carl Visser (the eBay guy) Rosewood dash. Very, very nice quality and EVERY hole on the back is pre-drilled.

The upper dash pad is new and all of the others are being replaced as well. I only bought that kit from Vicky Brit five years ago during a sale. The prices have gone up a LOT since then. Of course that's how long it's taken me to get the dash and gauges completed.

Brand new, 2009 TR6. The mileage starts at 56,500 on all of the new parts.

My Odometer has stopped rolling but the speedometer still works. Where do I send it and the tach for a rebuild? Also, how do I get the lights brighter? It has to be pitch black to read the gauges at night. Do I get bigger watt bulbs?

I took pictures at Erik's today but was rushing and they are really crappy, so I just deleted them. The wood dash came out beautifully and the gauges are a lot brighter. I'll post in the next few days when I get the car back.

If you were to take them apart, you would see that the paint is dull and flaking inside the cases. You really need to improve that to make the light reflect better.

As far as repairs, if you want to follow the article written for speedometer repairs, I do have some spare parts from leftover gauges that I will give you if you find that you need them. I think that Julian had the same problem and it was a broken plastic cog of sorts.

This is what your gauge will look like if you shake it up after you take it out and don't get the old flaky paint of the inside. This looked like the shaking snow toys that kids get at Christmas.

Might it also be related to the rheostat? My rheostat was classic Lucas "1. Dim 2. flicker 3. off". I took it apart, cleaned it up, reassembled it, and it works much better. Now it is "1.adequate 2. dim 3. off"

I have a shelved set of gauges. I want to send the tach and speedo out for a rebuild, you know gears and all. I can follow your link, disassemble and clean up the small gauges, no problem. They are in good shape and all are working. The two large gauges need help that I can't give them I think. Where do they go?

Nisonger was the best, but it's under new ownership and I've heard that they are not very friendly. Nisonger

There is a lady in AZ or out west that is good, but she blew me off when I called with the "I'm much too busy to talk" attitude, so I deleted her from the list.

APT aka Gauge Guys, is also good, but these guys are getting VERY expensive. Like $175 per big gauge expensive. APT

This is the speedo all apart. If your gears are no worse than this, (and they shouldn't be) clean and lube everything up, repaint the cases and add some new bulbs.

Notice the white snow inside? If you don't get that out before assembly, it will be on your speedometer face or glass in about a week.

Some of the pics were ok, but none of the lighting. New pads and forward progress. Dash actually looks better in daylight than with flash going off.
