Dash light bulbs

Dale, I have the inti-static Endust that I've used often on my laptop computers, but what did you use to actually clean the "yellowed numbers"? Or did you even touch them?
 
Got the new incandescent bulbs in today. Time to start playing as soon as I get the sockets.
 
Well, good news and bad news. First the good. I learned why some have said that there is a difference in the sizes of the holes in the tach/speedo compared to the oil/volt/temp/fuel gauges. The (4) smaller guages have a smaller "tube" formed on the back of the gauge, versus the wide open hole with the green diffuser in the tach/speedo. Also in comparing the holes, I noticed that the tach had perfectly clear green tinted diffusers and the speedo diffusers were either burned or are just filthy as Tinster has stated. These are extra ebay gauges, not my own, which I believe to be in much better shape.

Now for the bad news. The bulbs have a slightly bigger globe or lens which will not fit in the (4) smaller guages, so it looks like it's back to the drawing board and another call to the lighting company.

I'm still going to try to swap out bulbs in my TR6 over the weekend to compare brightness, or if I can get sockets, light up these spare guages wired to a 12V power supply.

The Mr. Wizard experiment continues after a short commercial break..........sigh............
 
Just a suggestion, please stop killing yourself, pull all of the green diffusers out and replace the bulbs with greem LED's I am sure that you will be very happy.
 
That would be green not greem LED's. Greem is a color you just don't want to see.
 
Al, you know how these projects start to take on a life of their own after a while. It becomes a matter of pride to try to get something to work. Now that I've found that I can get green LED's and that the cheap bulbs won't work, that's what I will do.

And yes, I was going to use Green, rather than the much lighter Greem.
 
Good Choice!!! Let us know how they work out. At night mine give off that kind of radioactive glow, it's kind of cool.
 
OK Al, save me some more steps here. Did you buy the replacement LED's for the #428 bulb (10mm) that is a screw in replacemnet? If so, where, how much and were they the 4-LED bulbs? Like this:

Finally some defitive information about LED dash replacement bulbs. For me, the draw back in the past has been the directional design of "regular" LED's; obviously you have broken that mold with the LED in the picture. I sure hope you post some specifics about the bulbs when you finish the lighting project.
 
Yes they were the 10mm screw type replacements. I used the bulbs with the inverted lens so the light would be diffused out the side to reflect off of the inside wall of the gauge. I got them at Autolumination.com. I have never seen those bulbs you have in the picture. They look like they would throw a lot of light in all directions, but I am wondering if it will fit in the gauge hole, especially the Temp. Gauge. I think that one has a tube that the bulb has to fit down.
 
I’m hoping they have something like that in 1157 or whatever the # is for the brake, tail and front directional/parking lights. The pictured bulbs seem to be designed to work with a diffuser lenses.
 
VD, check the web site. I believe that they have direct replacements for 1157 and other automotive bulbs.

These are actually (5)-LED lights, rather than the (4) that I incorrectly referred to them as above. And they recommend using the green bulbs with the green diffusers, if you read their web page recommendations. Match the color of the gauge diffuser is the advice given.

I think that these may be a bit more direct, but the diffuser takes care of spreading the love around.
