Ah yes, the weather is finally looking better and better. Maybe I can get that top down this week?!
Anyway, I have this noisy rattle on the passenger side under the dash area. I cant see in there to well from underneath so I was thinking about taking the top dash cover off to give it a good look and see what is making the noise. How do I take this off? Or should I leave it alone if at all possible?
I have a 78 MG 1500 if it makes any difference.
 
there is no top dash cover - there is only the dash. you can take the glove box off separately and look/ feel under. There are (as I recall) 4 nuts that have to come off and you pretty much need a MOWOG to do it. You might be easier to remove the passenger seat, lie on your back and look up.

BTW - what does the rattle sound like?

I'm going to hazard a guess here and suggest the flasher unit is rattling since I can't think of anything else that would make a noise there.
 
Agree on the need for a MOWOG. I took apart a '68 dash last year that was being trashed and was in bad shape anyway to get out turn signal lamps. Aside from the bottom dash straps, there are 4 1/2" or 9/16" nuts that you need small tools. lots of arm strength, and tiny, tiny hands to get at. You may chance really tearing out wiring or breaking something. Not an easy job to simply take out the dash. Perhaps one of those live with it situations unless really, really annoying..
 
I guess my thinking was wrong. I saw in the Moss Catalog the replacement dash cover and thought that piece didnt actually go over the dash rather it was more a "cap" to cover the guts underneath. I checked the hazard switch and that is ok. It may be something between the firewall area? It sounds like soemthing has come loose and it is vibrating around on the metal more so when Im on the gas getting rolling. The question is what the heck is it? Everything on the engine side is tight so Im clueless on this one.
 
have you removed the glove box? that is relatively easy and you might have whatever is loose drop out. another thought - check and see if the bottom braces have come loose at one end or the other. Is it a metal to metal sound? metal to plastic? metal to wire sound?
