Why can't we delete our own post?

I've wondered the same thing since the day I joined.

I post to a couple forums that allow self-deletion as long as
  • you don;t want to delete the first post in the thread
  • the post you want to delete has not been answered by the next poster
  • it's an unintentional duplicate
I guess it's the same to delete the content and simply post that you deleted your contribution.
